Ocean City's Block Party to Go On Rain or Shine

Events Oct. 12 to 14 include a massive block party, fireworks, discounted rides, table sales and more.

The fall block party on Asbury Avenue — which typically attracts more than 40,000 visitors — is scheduled for Saturday (Oct. 12) and marks the pinnacle of Ocean City's shoulder season.

The event will go on rain or shine.

The event started 30 years ago and has grown into a full Indian Summer Weekend Festival that includes three days of activities, including a Saturday night fireworks display, three days of table sales and a seafood festival.

The centerpiece of the special weekend is the mile-long block party that extends from Fifth to 14th streets along Asbury Avenue 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat., Oct. 12. More than 400 juried crafters from throughout the East Coast participate in the event that features hand-made products.

Parking: Parking will be free on city lots and streets from Wesley Ave. to the bay. Meters will be working and there will be parking fees for lots and spaces between Wesley Avenue and the Boardwalk.

Block party features: The event includes a variety of foods highlighted by Greek specialties, ribs, seafood, pizza, hot dogs, burgers, baked goods and more. Bands and street musicians entertain along the block party route from 1 to 4 p.m. There are free pony rides for children 1 to 4 p.m. at the Tabernacle Grounds, Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue. Public service displays for non-profit organizations are set up on Ninth Street between Asbury and Central avenues.

Fireworks: A fireworks display that had been scheduled for 9:30 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 12) following the block party is now canceled. Rough seas will prevent the barge from launching the display safely. The fireworks will not be rescheduled.

Seafood Center and Boardwalk table sales: A seafood center will be set up at the Ocean City Music Pier 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 12 to 14. The center will feature local seafood restaurants and vendors.  The seafood festival will be held rain or shine. Boardwalk merchants will hold table sales starting Saturday, Oct. 12, and ending Monday, Oct. 14. Downtown merchants will hold sidewalk sales on Sunday and Monday.

Discounted Rides: Customer Appreciation Weekend at Playland's Castaway Cove includes a $10 wristband good for unlimited rides 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 11 and 12 (Friday and Saturday) and 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 13 (Sunday).

Frank Sinatra Tribute: The Greater Ocean City Theatre Company has extended their professional series into the fall with My Way, A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra, a 53-song tour through the music and legend that was Ol’ Blue Eyes himself. The show runs for three performances only at the Moorlyn Family Theatre (Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace) on October 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and October 13 at p.m. Four performers take the reins of Sinatra’s songbook. Tickets are $18 for adults and $15 for students, kids and seniors.
