Letter From Mayor: Displaced Pecks Beach Village Residents Are All Back Home

Mayor Jay A. Gillian's letter to the public for March 8, 2013, is as follows:

Dear Friends,

I would like to share some good news with you. Earlier this week, the remaining residents of Pecks Beach Village were able to move back into their homes.

This was an important milestone for the city. The residents of Pecks Beach Village are a true reflection of our community, and like many others, they have been living in hotels, motels, staying with family in close quarters, or forced to live offshore. The majority of these residents were not able to celebrate the holidays in their homes.  

The city and the Housing Authority worked with local and union contractors to repair and rehabilitate the homes of the families and senior citizens from Pecks Beach that were displaced by Superstorm Sandy. Residents began to return to the newly renovated units beginning February 1, and continued to return home each week as units were completed.  

Now that these residents have returned to their homes, it does not mean the city’s partnership with the Housing Authority and the community needs to end.  I plan to continue working with the Housing Authority on additional projects and partnerships that help strengthen the quality of life for our residents and beautify our community.

I would like to again express my appreciation to the residents of Pecks Beach Village for their patience and thank everyone involved in this project for their hard work and dedication.
