Full Length of Causeway Pedestrian/Bike Path Now Open

Bicyclists and pedestrians now can travel between Ocean City and Somers Point on a separated path along the reconstructed Route 52 causeway.

Construction crews on Saturday removed the barricades that blocked part of the route, according to state Department of Transportation spokesman Timothy Greeley.

Since the four vehicle lanes of the new elevated causeway opened in May 2012, pedestrians and cyclists have been able to use the section of the path between Somers Point and the mid-causeway fishing piers. But the section closest to Ocean City remained closed as work continued on the causeway visitors center.

With the opening of the full path, bicycles and pedestrians have a safe route of just more than two miles between Ocean City and Somers Point where none existed before. Bicycle and pedestrian traffic were prohibited on the old causeway.

Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang confirmed the opening of the path but said that there may be brief closings during continuing work on the causeway.

The six-year, $400 million project to replace the main travel route into Ocean City is nearing completion. On Monday, Greeley did not have information available on the visitors center, the last major piece of the project.

The new separated path will be open to pedestrians and recreational bicyclists. High-speed cyclists are asked to use the shoulders of the highway.

At the Somers Point terminus of the separated path, bicyclists and pedestrians can loop underneath the bridge to avoid crossing a busy intersection and gain easy access to Bay Avenue and the bike path that runs from Somers Point to Pleasantville.
