Well said, Bob. Why on earth does the city allow every contractor to do such terrible patch jobs? Riding a bike in this town is dangerous enough without having to keep an eye out for all the crotch-jarring patches. Obviously, the mayor/council don't care. Doesn't seem to happen in other towns - why?

The teachers are NOT paid for those days off. Most contracts call for 180 days of student contact (the state requirement), and most districts factor in 2 to 10 days for in-service (when students have off) and days before/after the school year. Teachers receive many days off for summer, holidays, "winter recess," (used to be called Christmas), spring (Easter), and two days for the convention. None of them are paid, or counted toward their contracted days.

PS- Romney is running, not on his record, but from it. He's distancing himself from all his previous (as Gov of Mass) moderate positions on Unions, health-care, and abortion rights. As far as i can figure, he doesn't have a plan, other than to repeal Obamacare, which is really Romneycare.

Hahahah. If you lose your job, you can just "buy" your health insurance? With WHAT? So, if it happens to me, I'll just join the others without insurance - in the ER, which YOU ALL will pay for. Hmmmm - what would Jesus think of you? "Screw thy neighbor, and to hell with the poor!" Or, isn't the Bible "clear" enough language for you? Hypocrites, most of you.

Joe R - You're on the money about Medicaid. God forbid you're on Medicaid and lose your dentures! There's not a dentist in the area that can help, unless you pay out of pocket, which I did a few times - I mean, how can you deny your Mother her teeth, at any expense? If she had no family, or if I couldn't afford it, then what? If you "give" your assets to say, Wesley Manor, to live in the assisted living/nursing, please pray that you die before having to go on Medicaid. And try getting in if you're already ON Medicaid.... they only, by law, reserve 10% of beds for "those" people. Shameful. They may be church-run, or associated, but they're for-profit businesses. If Christ ever shows up again, they'd better run!

On a side note, the Fontombons went to a new Asian restaurant by Marmora Shop-Rite two weeks ago, Saturday night. Had a 45-minute wait - two large parties just about dominated the small dining area. They were long finished eating, spent the 45 minutes finishing up their 12-packs of beer and multiple wine bottles. (I guess they walked home...right). Multiple parties (and their dollars) walked out after hearing the wait time. The take-out business was huge, which may be why the owner tolerated this rudeness in the dining area. I'll never dine there again, though the food was absolutely great. Is this what you want?

The screwballs that think BYOB will "revitalize" the downtown are deluded. It's all a dream based on marketing the glory years of Asbury Avenue. Time was, ALL stores were open on Wednesday AND Friday nights, till 9! Before Searstown, and the Hamilton Mall. How many of you stopped shopping at Leon's, Staintons, Mayer's, Dixon's, etc... in favor of the new malls and box stores? It's a last-gasp bailout for restaurant owners who can't bother to change their marketing, menus, or advertising. Look at the lines at Luigis, Piccini, the crazy crowds at Sack-O-Subs and Voltacos. We're a seasonal resort. Get it?? It's sad that people are willing to risk so much for so very, very little. Failure rate for new businesses is around 60% nationally.

    (3) Parking. Most all of the offshore restaurants have plenty of parking. How successful would the Crab Trap be at 1st & Asbury? Imagine driving around endlessly looking for a parking place, in summer traffic. Nonsense.
    (4) Effort. Most of the restaurants that are pro-BYOB mentioned in the comments are in serious need of a shape-up. Dirty windows, floors, in need of paint. Sandwiched between run-down closed businesses. Cheap signage, old equipment. The locals I know don't frequent them anyway - other than to "shop locally," there's no good reason to. Look how popular Luigi's is in your poll... cheapest place to eat in OC for families. THAT'S why they have lines in the summer. The food is average and bland, but fresh and clean. Great service.

On BYOB: (1) The "dining" in OC has changed dramatically over the years. People used to stay in rooming houses and hotels. With the advent of "condos" people started to cook their own meals to save money. Goodbye Spence Seafood, Plantation Kitchen, Campbell's, Hickman's, etc. etc...
    (2) Unlike upscale Haddonfield, which the pro-people love to refer to, and Cape May, OC is a FAMILY resort. People cook in their condos, and get the cheap take-out or boardwalk food, or regional favorites. I'm sure that Voltaco's, Manco & Manco, Sacco's, Express, etc.. could care less about BYOB. They "get" it. Ever see lots of families in Cape May? Didn't think so.
    (2) In Cape May, it's a short walk to a liquor store from some, if not most, restaurants that have BYOB. Watch the people walking in the Mad Batter, finding out it's BYOB, then they walk to the liquor store around the corner. Do you really think people will DRIVE over a bridge, buy a bottle or two, then DRIVE back over? Ha-ha!

The schedule is in place at Mainland, second year. It's a great success. Food kiosks are necessary to serve all students in one lunch session, rather than being spread out over many hours. A very positive change, from what I hear.
