Rowers Transported to Hospital After Grounding Crew Shell

Ocean City High School crew team members were transported as a precaution after getting wet in 36-degree water.

Members of an Ocean City High School crew team rowed into 20 mph west winds with an air temperature of about 30 degrees on Wednesday afternoon. When their eight-man shell got stuck in the mud near Waterview Road in Merion Park, they ended up wading through 36-degree water to get to shore. Nobody was injured, but seven cold and wet students were transported by two Ocean City Fire Department ambulances to Shore Medical Center as a precaution, according to Capt. Dave Weeks. The team's shells are stored and launched from under the 34th Street Bridge, and the boat was stuck in the mud about 20 feet from shore a few blocks away, according to Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang. The Fire Department responded with police to the 6:16 p.m. water …

Beachgoer Transported to Hospital After Water Rescue

The female was rescued at Ninth Street Beach after lifeguards had left for the evening.

A tempting 73-degree ocean and strong south winds made for a dangerous combination on Saturday evening as a female was caught in rip currents near the jetty at Ninth Street. The Ocean City Beach Patrol had ended its shift an hour earlier when people on the beach noticed at 6:30 p.m. that one their group was having trouble getting back to shore. A member of the group, two bystanders and later police personnel helped bring the swimmer back to the beach. An Ocean City Fire Department water rescue unit also responded. She was stable and was transported to Shore Memorial Hospital by an OCFD ambulance, according to firefighter Ray Clark.  Clark said swimmers who take salt water into their lungs can sometimes suffer complications even after they …

No Violations Found in Personal Watercraft Accident

State Police release information on the June 30 incident.

An investigation into a June 30 personal watercraft accident in Ocean City is complete, and no summons has been issued, according to the State Police Marine Division in Atlantic City. A child was flown by helicopter to the trauma center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as a result of the accident. Police said the boy was one of three passengers on a personal watercraft that was towing an inflatable tube when wind, currents and the tow rope caused the boy to fall into the water. The injuries were caused by the fall, and no other watercraft was involved, police said. The operators had been safely using the inflatable — with a spotter on board the personal watercraft to watch the person being towed, police said. The personal watercraft …

Two More Rescues in Dangerous Water at Ninth Street

Ocean City Beach Patrol and police personnel involved in separate water rescues.

Ocean City Beach Patrol lifeguards and Ocean City Police Department personnel were involved in separate ocean rescues on Saturday evening near the Ninth Street jetty. The rescues happened at the same place where four swimmers were pulled safely from the water by OCBP lifeguards on Thursday in a rescue that left one lifeguard with minor injuries to her legs (from the jetty) and briefly hospitalized another (who had trouble breathing after taking in some salt water). Saturday's first rescue occurred while the Ocean City Beach Patrol was still on duty, according to Ocean City Fire Department Capt. Scott Goucher. A swimmer was pulled safely from the water near the jetty. The second rescue happened after the OCBP guards had left for the day. A …

Off-Duty Lifeguard Rescues Four at Ninth Street on Sunday

The Ocean City Beach Patrol's Matt Betson helps a father and three children clinging to the Ninth Street jetty.

For Ocean City Beach Patrol lifeguard Matt Betson, Sunday turned out to be a typical summer day—with warm weather, a crowded beach at Ninth Street and an ocean rescue. But that's not what the 22-year-old expected to find in early October. Betson, a seven-year guard, had returned to the beach where he's worked for the past five summers only to give his pet turtles some sun. Shortly after he got there, he heard a mother screaming from the beach and looked up to see a father and his three children in the water hanging onto the rocks of the Ninth Street jetty. Unable to swim back to the beach, the father was trying to have his children climb onto the slippery rocks. Betson took the plunge into the 65-degree water and felt the shallow sand give…
