The state issues new performance reports on Wednesday to schools statewide.
The state Department of Education gave all school districts in the state a new report card on Wednesday, and the "grading" appears to be a lot harder. In addition to being compared to schools statewide, Ocean City schools are now being compared to similar districts in "peer groups." This curved grading system leaves Ocean City schools in the bottom half of the class in some categories. The report cards for Ocean City High School, Ocean City Intermediate School and Ocean City Primary School are attached to this story as PDFs. He won this year's event at Galloway Middle School after 30 rounds of competition.
Galloway Township Middle School seventh grader Ebose Eigbe is on his way back to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Eigbe punched his ticket with a victory in the South Jersey Spelling Bee Saturday, March 23, at the middle school. It took 30 rounds for Eigbe to edge 30 challengers, and he captured the title by correctly spelling the word, "cease," according to Roland Rogers fifth grade teacher Brian Dunn. Second place went to Northfield seventh grader Pranshu Suri, and Egg Harbor Township seventh grader Beth Anne Castellano took third. Eighth-grader Austin Fox represented Ocean City Intermediate School in the competition. Champions from 30 Atlantic and Cape May county schools will compete in Galloway Township on Saturday.
Ocean City Intermediate School eighth-grader Austin Fox will try to earn a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee when he joins the Spelling Bee champions from the other Atlantic and Cape May elementary and middle schools in the regional bee Saturday at Galloway Township Middle School. Fox, who was named the top scholar in seventh grade last year, joins 30 other champions for the South Jersey Spelling Bee on March 23. The district is preparing students for this year's tests in the spring.
With four to five days of state standardized testing scheduled for April and May, the Ocean City Board of Education paused Wednesday to recognize students who received perfect scores on last year's New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) tests. The NJ ASK tests are long and extensive assessments of language arts and math given to all New Jersey students in grades 3 to 8. Students in grades 4 and 8 are also tested in science. The following students received perfect scores on at least one section of the NJ ASK. The majority were perfect in math—with a small number of fourth- and eighth-graders acing science. Achieving a perfect score in language arts is generally considered harder because of subjective writing portions of the …

Congratulations to the Ocean City Intermediate School wrestlers who placed at the Cape-Atlantic Middle School Tournament on Feb 12 at Ocean City High School: 1st Place 2nd Place 3rd Place Seven wrestlers competed and six (6) took home medals. First place puts them on an ALL-STAR team that will wrestle the Tri-County All Stars on March 14 at Overbrook High School.

The Ocean City Intermediate School Band and Choir will host a spaghetti dinner and auction on Thursday (Feb. 7) to raise money for a spring trip to New York City. While in New York, students will have the opportunity to participate in Broadway Workshops and attend a performance of "Mary Poppins." The fundraiser will begin with take-out orders at 4:30 p.m. followed by the auction and dinner, which will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ocean City Intermediate School cafeteria. Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 to 12, and free for children age 3 and under. The students ask the public to join them and enable them to experience the arts in a different and enriching way.

Wiggins is in a new commercial for Booking.com that was filmed in Cancun.
Local child actor Pete Wiggins has been spotted in a new television commercial for Booking.com. Wiggins, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at Ocean City Intermediate School, traveled to Cancun in Mexico with his family to film the commercial after he was cast from an audition in New York City. Booking.com is a website for hotel reservations, and the commercial focuses on Wiggins and his TV "family" booking through the site and finding a hotel paradise exactly as described. "The filming was a whole lot of fun," Wiggins said this week. "So was the hotel pool." The Betsy Young Memorial Fund will present a Winter Carnival for families from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Ocean City Intermediate School. The family event includes games, prizes, food, music, special guests and a special Chinese Auction. Proceeds benefit the Betsy Young Scholarship Fund for Ocean City High School students. The fund is named for a music teacher who inspired many young students in her 13 years of teaching at Ocean City Intermediate School. Young died of a form of brain cancer at age 50 in August 2011. At the fundraiser, popular carnival games such as disk drop, bean bag toss, quarter pitch and lucky duck will be featured. Students need a surfboard or sailboard to continue a six-year tradition at Ocean City Intermediate School.
The Ocean City Intermediate School eighth-grade art classes are searching for a surfboard or sailboard. For six years, the graduating eighth-grade class has covered a board with tiles, glass and paint to make a beautiful mosaic. Many different styles have been created — ranging from beach scenes, to a dedication to the late Betsy Young, instrumental music teacher at the school. Art teacher Judy Dickens thought of the project back in 2007 and has continued it ever since. "We started designing a mosaic surfboard in the eighth-grade art class," Dickens said. Elementary school children from Chestnut Hill bring gifts for Ocean City Intermediate School students displaced by Superstorm Sandy.
More than 20 students from the J.S. Jenks Elementary School in Chestnut Hill, Pa., loaded a school bus full of gifts on Thursday and took a trip to the shore. Their destination was Ocean City Intermediate School, where about 60 students and a half-dozen teachers are still displaced from their homes in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, whose record flooding left widespread damage throughout the island. The trip was the brainchild a Alice Goldsmith, a computer science teacher in the K-8 school who spends summers in Ocean City, where her father has a home.
