Live Cams Offer View of Ocean City From Any Computer

A growing array of beach and boardwalk cams provide a real-time glimpse of weather, waves and crowds.

When Bob Dylan wrote famously that "you don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows," he wasn't trying to get an Ocean City beach report from the mainland. Otherwise, he would know that you need a weatherman and more — preferably a friend on the beach with a cell phone. But a growing collection of video cameras are now pointed at Ocean City beaches, boardwalks and roads, and they provide the next best thing to eyewitness reports: live images delivered across the Internet in real time to homes anywhere in the world. The beach cams provide vital information on weather and surf conditions on a barrier island that has a climate of its own. Depending on ocean temperature and the wind, Ocean City's weather conditions can differ …

Guide to Night in Venice July 28 in Ocean City

Get ready to have fun at Ocean City's annual summer celebration.

Ocean City's Night in Venice is one of the biggest events of the summer for visitors and the height of the summer social scene for bayside residents. The annual boat parade starts this year at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 28.  The lineup of decorated boats will proceed from the base of the Ocean City-Longport Bridge along the bayfront, in and out of lagoons along the way, all the way to Tennessee Avenue (off Bay Avenue between 22nd and 23rd streets). For the first time in the 58-year history of the event, there will be no traffic delays due to Ninth Street causeway drawbridge openings. The old drawbridge was demolished and replaced by a fixed span that gives boats 55 feet of vertical clearance.  Here are some details on the annual event:   Grand …

I totally agree Eleanor. I have been dealing with this as a merchant for 14 years. It's not even a disconnect. It's a no connect...If it's a new idea, it's not even considered. Out of date PR policies and PR person is putting it mildly along with the Main St. and RMA organizations...   more ›

Summer Concert Series Starts Monday With Bacon Brothers

The Ocean City Music Pier will host eight rock shows in its Summer Concert Series.

Tickets are on sale now for the eight shows this summer that make up the Summer Concert Series at the Ocean City Music Pier. The series begins on Monday, July 9, with The Bacon Brothers led by actor Kevin Bacon and his older brother, Michael.   The band has been performing together for 17 years, and "any cynical preconceptions about well-known actors 'dabbling' in music can be safely discarded," according to the show promoter. "Kevin writes a lot more of the songs than I do," Michael Bacon says. "While I spend a lot of time writing instrumental music, lyrical songs are tougher. If I write one or two a year that I like, then I'm happy. But Kevin has this amazing gift of turning everyday experiences into universal thoughts that everybody can…

Complete Guide to Fourth of July Week in Ocean City

From fireworks to beach tags, everything you need to know to enjoy the holiday week.

The Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, and with good weather in the forecast, Ocean City is expected to be jammed all week. Ocean City survived a powerful line of thunderstorms on Saturday, June 30, that left much of the region without power. And sea breezes have been taking the edge off the heat that has been baking the mainland. Here's everything you need to know to take advantage of the holiday week.   The new Route 52 causeway is open to four lanes of traffic (two in each direction) between Somers Point and Ninth Street in Ocean City. Officials celebrated the completion of the roadway portion of the project in May, and work on the mid-causeway visitors center, boat ramps and bike paths and other amenities is expected to be …

Beach Patrol Creates Rapid Response Team

Ocean City Beach Patrol forms a mobile unit for evening rescues and announces extended hours at downtown beaches.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol recently created a “Rapid Response Team” to work with police and fire personnel on water rescues and other after-hours emergencies. Four lifeguards will be stationed at the 12th Street Beach Patrol headquarters Sundays through Thursdays until 8 p.m. They will be equipped to respond to emergencies by personal watercraft or all-terrain vehicle. On Fridays, Saturdays and holidays, lifeguards will be stationed at Eighth, Ninth and 12th Streets until 8 p.m. These are the only beaches will be guarded after the patrol’s normal closing time (weekdays at 5 p.m. and Saturdays/Sundays at 5:30 p.m.). Nobody has ever drowned in water protected by the Ocean City Beach Patrol in its 114-year history. But near-drownings and …

Ocean City Boardwalk Adds Mascot Night to Weekly Family Themes

Character Night will be held every Sunday on the Boardwalk starting July 8.

Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia has its Phanatic, but the Ocean City Boardwalk has a parade of its own mascots — including a "Fry Guy" (Jilly's French Fry Factory) a break-dancing Swagstein (Cap Swag), the veteran Wonder Bear (who just celebrated his 83rd birthday at Gillian's Wonderland Pier) and the iconic Martin Z. Mollusk (City of Ocean City). The mischievous mascots will be teaming up on Sunday nights this summer as part of a new family theme night on the Boardwalk: Character Night. The event will be held every Sunday from July 8 to August 19.
