Major Surf Fishing Tournament to Cap Club's Centennial

The Ocean City Fishing Club will finish its 100-year anniversary celebration with a three-day surf fishing event.

The Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC) will conclude a nearly year-long centennial celebration next October with an ambitious, three-day surf fishing tournament that is expected to draw up to 100 East Coast teams competing for total cash awards of $20,000. The competition will take place October 17-19, 2013, along the beaches of Ocean City. "We believe this 100th anniversary event will be the largest surf fishing tournament that has ever been held in Ocean City," said Mike Hayes, an OCFC trustee and tournament chair. "The city administration and the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce are solidly behind what we are doing. In addition to hosting the 28-member Association of Surf Angling Clubs (ASAC) in New Jersey, we anticipate attracting many teams…

Ocean City Fishing Club Unveils Centennial Banner

The club plans a year-long celebration of its 100th anniversary.

Several dozen trustees, officers and members of the Ocean City Fishing Club gathered at their clubhouse on Saturday afternoon (March 16) for the unveiling of the club's 2013 centennial banner. The 4’x8’ banner now hangs on the front of the clubhouse at the Boardwalk near 14th Street in Ocean City. It was designed and printed by club trustee Joe Hughes and his wife, Lili, who own Del Val Print Solutions in Sicklerville. (Two older, smaller banners that say “99 Years” on either side of the new one will be updated.) Founded in 1913, the Ocean City Fishing Club is the oldest, continuously operating fishing club in America. The year-long centennial celebration began in January with the Ocean City Arts Center’s exhibit featuring paintings of the…

The Ocean City Fishing Club: 100 Years and Counting

The club looks forward to a year-long celebration and looks back on a storied past.

It was the summer of 1913, and Woodrow Wilson was six months into his first term as the 28th President of the United States. The Panama Canal was nearing completion. A gallon of gasoline cost eight cents. And a group of forward-looking surf anglers met inside a store in Ocean City, N.J., to establish the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC).  These men laid the foundation for an organization that is now celebrating its 100th anniversary — the oldest, continuously operating fishing club in America. “Every one of our 215 men and women members owe a debt of gratitude to the individuals who had the foresight to launch this club so many years ago,” said OCFC President Paul Keuerleber. To commemorate the milestone, the club has planned a year-long …

In recognition of the Ocean City Fishing Club’s 100th anniversary in 2013, the Ocean City Arts Center will host an exhibition of new paintings depicting the iconic fishing pier and clubhouse at 14th Street and the beach.   The paintings were created by the South Jersey Plein Air Group, which consists of local artists who paint outdoors at a designated location within the region, and the Ocean City Fine Arts League. The artistic term comes from a French expression, “En plein air, in the open air.” The exhibit will run through the month of January, with a "Meet the Artists" reception on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, from 7 to 8:30 pm. The reception is free and open to the public. The artists will attend the reception to discuss their paintings, …

Trustees and officers of the Ocean City Fishing Club have voted to contribute $250 to the Ocean City Community Food Cupboard to help local residents affected by Sandy's devastating storm, President Paul K. Keuerleber announced. The club made the donation to the Ocean City Ecumenical Council, Inc., which maintains the Ocean City Community Food Cupboard. "It is heart-warming to have so many people helping those who lost everything," Ecumenical Council President Elaine L. Wilson wrote in a letter of response to the fishing club. "Because of generous people like you, we can help put a smile on many faces.” Wilson said donated funds are used to purchase bags of emergency food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies for needy victims of a destructive…

Ocean City Fishing Club Elects New President

Paul Keuerleber will serve as the club and its 14th Street Pier celebrate a 100th anniversary.

When Paul Keuerleber was a teenager visiting Ocean City many years ago, he had a dream of becoming a member of the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC).  That dream was fulfilled in 1992, and last month the 69-year-old Keuerleber was elected president of the oldest, continuously operating fishing club in the United States — one that will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013 with its iconic 14th Street pier undamaged by Hurricane Sandy. “This is an exciting time for our 216 members of the Ocean City Fishing Club, for the City of Ocean City, and for the many local merchants who support our efforts” said Keuerleber, who will preside over a series of events planned for the club’s centennial. Those activities include a three-day surf fishing …

‘Fishin’ Sisters’ Rule in 45th Annual O.C. Surf Tournament

The Ocean City Fishing Club sponsors the annual September event.

Ocean City resident Joyce McNeely and her sibling, Karen Csenteri, of Columbus, N.J., landed two of the top awards Saturday (Sept. 15) after wading into the surf to compete in the 45th annual Ocean City Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament. “We’re the fishin’ sisters,” Joyce declared when she won a plaque for catching the largest fish in the women’s division — a 15 3/4-inch bluefish — and Karen collected hers for the most fish points for a woman. Both are part of a family team, the McNeely Manglers, which includes husbands Joe Csenteri and Ray McNeely. Overall, their team came in third in the final tally for surf fishing teams, with a total of 149 points. They were up against some formidable competition. The Surf N Land “A” team came in …

Threat of Rain Fails to Dampen Boys and Girls Fishing Contest

The Ocean City Fishing Club sponsored its 37th annual tournament on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Despite the possibility of rain, 73 youngsters and their parents and grandparents assembled on Ocean City’s north-end beach Saturday morning (Aug. 11) for the 37th annual Boys and Girls Surf Fishing Tournament. The downpour did not arrive until hours after the end of the event, giving  contestants all the time they needed to reel in a total of 113 fish, including flounder, sea bass, kingfish, weakfish, spot, sand sharks and oyster catchers. This free event for boys and girls between 8 and 16 years of age is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC) and the City’s Department of Recreation, with support from area merchants and businesses that donate prizes. Many of the young anglers return year after year to compete in the …

Small Fish Yield Big Prizes in 44th Annual Surf Fishing Tournament

The tournament draws 171 contestants but reels in few big catches.

Ocean City’s 44th Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday (Sept. 17) included 171 men, women and youngsters, but they couldn’t find any big ones out there. Small bluefish, kingfish and omnipresent sharks dominated the catches. In the women’s division, Sharon Otto, of Southampton, NJ, took home a trophy after reeling in a 13.25-inch blue. She was fishing with the Women’s Surf Angling Club. Her counterpart was Ralph DiLucca, of Philadelphia, who won with a 15.25-inch bluefish. He was a member of a team from the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association. DiLucca’s catch also earned him the second annual Tom Hayes Memorial Trophy for the largest fish. The award is named for a former president of the Ocean City Fishing Club. The six-member …
