The inaugural StandUP4SEALS 'Get in the Fight' Beach Challenge will go on with only a small change in the course.
An obstacle race on the beach on May 25 will move to avoid continuing beach replenishment work on part of the original course. The inaugural StandUP4SEALS 'Get in the Fight' Beach Challenge will include a two-mile beach run with five obstacles. The original course was planned to cover Fourth to 14th streets. But Army Corps of Engineers work crews will still be working in the area approaching 14th Street. Weather and mechanical delays pushed the project past a Memorial Day Weekend deadline. The modified course will now run between First Street and the Ocean City Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace, according to Mike Vaules, one of the race organizers. Two other events that are part of the Challenge — a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) relay in a box …

The semi-annual event showcases a downtown shopping district recovered from Superstorm Sandy.
A little more than six months after floodwaters from a massive hurricane buried Asbury Avenue and temporarily washed out most of its businesses, thousands of visitors strolled "The Avenue" on Saturday for the Spring Block Party — and there was no sign of the distant storm. The event offered a chance for people to see how well Ocean City has recovered from Superstorm Sandy. For 30 years, the downtown shopping district has sponsored semi-annual block parties that feature hundreds of crafters lined up along Asbury Avenue between Fifth and 14th streets. The event offers more than a mile of vendors, table sales from shops along the Avenue, and a variety of entertainment. On the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle, children enjoyed free pony …
Everybody is invited to participate in the all-night American Cancer Society event.
The annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will return to Ocean City for its fifth year on June 21 on the track at Ocean City High School. "It was a little iffy after Sandy, but the message is that cancer doesn't stop after storms," said Linda Raiser, one of the volunteers helping to organize this year's event. "We really want to get the word out that the Relay is not going away." The Relay for Life is an all-night celebration that honors the lives of people battling cancer, remembers those who have died of the disease and raises money in the search for a cure. For participating teams, the basic premise is simple: 10 to 20 people take turns walking or running around the track all night on Friday. It's the swirl of activity …

Martin Z. Mollusk sees his shadow for the 38th consecutive year.
Everybody who's tired of the long winter and windy spring can rest easy: Summer's coming early. Ocean City's hermit-crab mascot, Martin Z. Mollusk, saw his shadow at Ninth Street Beach on Thursday morning (May 2), and thus predicted the arrival of summer a week early. The fortuitous sighting was part of Ocean City's annual knockoff of Groundhog Day, which takes place each year on the first Thursday of May. The ceremony on the beach next to the Ocean City Music Pier includes a procession, a wind chimes band and songs. Despite a full variety of weather over the years and using some creative squinting, Martin has seen his shadow for 38 consecutive years (if you count a partial shadow in 1985). But for 2013, he had it easy: There was not a …

The annual Ocean City tradition has all the fun of Groundhog Day but none of the uncertainty. It happens again 11 a.m. May 2.
History was made in Ocean City on March 13, 1975. It was a chilly winter’s day, kind of miserable really. But that didn’t stop Martin Z. Mollusk from creeping onto the Ninth Street Beach and creating an Ocean City tradition. Mayor B. Thomas Waldman and Commissioner Marilyn Moore were present to witness that Martin did, in fact, see his shadow despite considerable fog — and thus summer would come one week early to this family resort. Following his successful outing, Martin conferred with the community leaders through his spiritual advisor and chef, Mark Soifer, the only person who can communicate with the crustacean. He asked, actually he demanded, that the ceremony be moved to the first Thursday in May. When the weather was more conducive …

The new StandUP4SEALS event is planned for Fourth Street Beach on Saturday, May 25.
A day after the mayor officially "unlocks the ocean" for 2013 season in Ocean City, a new Memorial Day Weekend event will include two of the hottest new fitness trends: stand-up paddleboarding and obstacle racing. The inaugural StandUP4SEALS 'Get in the Fight' Beach Challenge will offer three separate events Saturday, May 25, on the beach at Fourth Street: a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) relay in a box course that includes legs through the surf; a Tough Mudder-like beach run that includes five obstacles; and a fun run for kids. Race organizers visited the Ocean City Music Pier on Friday to announce details of the event, which will raise money for the families of Navy SEALS killed in action.
