The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce's annual Salute to Working Women honors four for their volunteer efforts.
On a sunny May day with Ocean City preparing to welcome tens of thousands of visitors for its annual Spring Block Party, the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce paused Wednesday to recognize four women for their volunteer efforts in helping Ocean City return to normal after Superstorm Sandy. "We wouldn't be where we are today without the women in this room, and I can't overstate that," said Drew Fasy, the chairperson of OCNJ CARE, the volunteer group that coordinated relief efforts in the aftermath of the October 2012 hurricane. "It was amazing to see." The Chamber honored: The recognition for the four women was part of the Chamber's annual Salute to Working Women. The event took place at a May 1 luncheon at the Ocean City Yacht Club…

The volunteer groups helps Ocean City families and businesses affected by Sandy.
More than 100 families and 35 businesses shared $232,000 in OCNJ CARE's first round of funding. The nonprofit community organization was formed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy to assist Ocean City with food, clothing and shelter needs. With the Oct. 29 storm causing hundreds of millions of dollars in estimated damage, the group cannot meet all of the island's needs, but with its recent distributions, it made an attempt to serve those who need the most help. “It is heartbreaking to see so many families in need," said Drew Fasy, co-chair of OCNJ CARE. "To the general public, it may appear that Ocean City is 100 percent, but behind the scenes, there are still properties that are completely devastated. It will be months before some …

The Ocean City community came together at the Flanders Hotel on Sunday for the 'Miracle on 11th Street' fundraiser.
About 600 people helped raise more than $15,000 on Sunday afternoon for OCNJ CARE — the volunteer organization coordinating Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in Ocean City. Admission to the "Miracle on 11th Street" event at the Flanders Hotel was by donation, and the community event included music and entertainment, food stations, a gingerbread house contest and a DJ for kids in the hotel's Garden Room. OCNJ CARE Chairperson Drew Fasy said the event was made possible through the generosity of the Flanders, which donated banquet rooms, food and staffing. Karen Bergman, director of catering for the Flanders, initially approached OCNJ CARE and said the hotel was "blessed" to have suffered relatively little storm damage and wanted to give back …

In the days before Christmas, the local firefighters' union helped part of the community that was hit hardest by Superstorm Sandy.
Ocean City firefighters have spent the last few days on a different kind of rescue. Members of Ocean City Firemen's Mutual Benevolent Association (FMBA) Local No. 27 have been delivering food, bedding and clothing to members of the non-English-speaking community in Ocean City — some of the island's residents hardest hit by the hurricane that left widespread damage on Oct. 29. "The kids were resigned to the fact that Christmas wasn't coming," firefighter Ray Clark said. Yet nobody asked for toys, he said. They knew their families needed the bare necessities: food, shelter and warmth. As Sandy — the hurricane-turned-monster-storm — moved away in late October and residents began to assess the damage to uninhabitable homes, many came forward …

The donations will help families displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
Families displaced by Hurricane Sandy will enjoy an early Christmas on Sunday as the Ocean City police union distributes more than $11,000 in toys and clothing at the Ocean City Sports and Civic Center. The Ocean City Policemen's Benevolent Association (PBA) Local No. 61 teamed up with trainers, doctors and staff members of Philadelphia professional sports teams to gather the contributions. Ocean City chiropractor Frank Brady helped organize a collection effort ($6,700) among teams that included the Eagles and Flyers. The local PBA used money ($4,500) raised at a Restaurants for Relief fundraiser that included Charlie's and Gregory's in Somers Point. A group that included representatives of the PBA and the volunteer storm relief group OCNJ…

South-end resident Lori Vitullo thanks volunteers for helping in aftermath of Sandy.
Our home on 53rd Street and Simpson Avenue was flooded because of Sandy. I needed to get my furniture, carpets, etc., out to the alley for trash pickup. My husband was in the hospital, and I had no one to help me. I remembered the OCNJ CARE flyer I had received and I contacted Joe Ney. There immediately started flurry of activity via emails and a time was set up for the next morning, whereby a team would come out to my house to help me. Sorry, but I have forgotten the names of my "angels," but I will never forget their kindness. They couldn't do enough for me, and imagine, when I thanked them, they thanked me for asking them to help. God bless them and the entire volunteer effort of OCNJCARE. Lori Vitullo Ocean City

A single mom and an East Atlantic Boulevard homeowner form an unlikely bond in the aftermath of the storm that devastated Ocean City.
Jessica Connolly found what she feared when she returned to her ground-level apartment at Third Street and Wesley Avenue after the flooding from a massive coastal storm receded: an overwhelming stench from waters that had ruined almost everything she owned. The 25-year-old single mother of two had no car, no regular job and suddenly no home. A short distance away, Robyn Betterly was returning to a vacation home on East Atlantic Boulevard in the Gardens section of Ocean City and realizing how fortunate she was. The property had sustained no damage, while so many others on the island had. "Somebody's got to be able to take advantage of this home," the 49-year-old resident of Fort Washington, Pa., said to her husband, Mark. What happened next…
