Osprey Project Visits Ocean City to Elevate Damaged Homes

Learn how you can help an effort to rebuild osprey nesting platforms.

Ben Wurst and Larissa Smith of Conserve Wildlife NJ brought a team to the south end of Ocean City recently to erect an osprey nesting platform, replacing one that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy. John Thornton, a videographer who lives on Dory Drive in the Ocean City Homes neighborhood, was on hand to film the work. "I happened to look out the window a few days ago and saw some people erecting an osprey nesting platform off 55th Street in place of the one that was wrecked by Sandy," Thornton said. "Naturally, I ran out and filmed what I could. It is such a positive story, the people who do this work are are so likable — plus a lot of us people in Ocean City love our birds." Thanks Barb! The osprey nest started out as a prop to give the right feel to our new space at Stainton's showcasing nautical themed furniture from "Authentic Models". Video Pays Tribute to Cape Pianist George Mesterhazy

Ocean City resident John Thornton produced the 21-minute film.

John Thornton — the Ocean City Homes resident who recently completed a four-part film series on the effects of Superstorm Sandy on the island and its inhabitants — recently completed a new film. In his words: One of the real legends of Cape May County was the brilliant jazz pianist George Mesterhazy, who presided for years at the piano in the Merion Inn in Cape May. George and his romantic partner, Vicky Watson, owned and ran the Merion Inn. George was a fixture at his piano bench when he wasn't traveling the world with such legends as Shirley Horne. Anyway, George died suddenly last April at the tragically young age of 59. More than 3,000 people attended his memorial service. I was looking at some old hard drives and started watching …

I have just finished viewing the 4th video and what a great job you have done. I am far away and have followed this storm with heartbreak right along with so many others. My hat is off to everyone who has worked so hard to recover and still working as the months continue. I wish you all the very best and will always be thinking of you. I have not visited the area since a child. My grandparents …   more ›
