Historical Images: Catholic Church at Second and Atlantic

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features the Catholic church located at Second Street and Atlantic Avenue.  The first photo shows what was then known as St. Mary's Catholic Church in 1920. The second photo shows the church located at Second and Atlantic today, St Frances Cabrini. Built in 1953, the name was changed to St. Frances and is now part of St. Damien Parish. Then and Now

Historical Images: St John Lutheran Church

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features St. John Lutheran Church located on the southeast corner of 10th Street and Central Avenue. The church was originally built in 1924 and is shown in the first image in 1945. The second image shows the church as it appears today. The addition was added in 1950. Then and Now

Historical Images: 10th Street and West Avenue

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features the building located on the southwest corner of 10th Street and West Avenue. The first image shows the building circa 1910. It was originaly built by the Electric Company to house their offices. The water company's water tower is seen in the background.  Today, the building is home to Orchid Realty and H&R Block. Then and Now

Historical Images: Redman Hall at Eighth and Haven

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features the building located at the corner of Eighth Street and Haven Avenue. The building was known as Redman Hall when it was built in the early 1920s and has served a variety of uses through the years. It was was the resort's most popular fraternal, social and sports center and held basketball games, dances and meetings. It was later home the Sentinel-Ledger and converted to its current business use in the early 1960s. Redman Hall was built for the Kalmia Tribe #220 by William H. Smith-Builder at a cost of $75,000. Smith was a past sachem of the Kalmia Tribe.  An article ran in the Nov. 22, 1923 edition of the Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger about the grand opening ceremony to be held on Nov. 24, 1923. Then and Now

Historical Images: Doctor's Home Lands at 10th and Pleasure

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features a home that was originally located at 10th Street and Wesley Avenue and is now at 10th and Pleasure Avenue. The first image shows the home as built at 10th and Wesley in the 1890s by Dr. Graham. The people on the porch are said to be lined up for the census count in 1900. The second image shows the home where it is now located on the corner of West 10th Street and Pleasure Avenue after being moved there. It has retained most of its original detail, including the widow's walk on the top of the home. This is a beautiful house and so nice to see a home like this preserved in Ocean City. To many times the older homes have been knocked down so a big plastic box can be put in its place. The owners have done a wonderful job maintaining its orginal style.   more ›

Then and Now

Historical Images: A Witch's Hat Disappears and Returns at Seventh and Asbury

A new weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features the building on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Asbury Avenue. The first photo is from 1895, when the building was home to Adams Fishing Tackle. The second photo is of the building in 1973, when it housed Connoisseurs Corner. You will notice the "witch's hat" on the corner was removed.  The third photo shows the building as it appears today, as home to a real estate office. Notice the "witch's hat" is back on the building. It was replaced when the building was renovated by a previous owner, Jim Penland. Then and Now

Historical Images: Sheppard's Garage at 641 Asbury Ave.

A weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features the building that is located at 641 Asbury Avenue. The building was built in 1929 and is shown in the first image circa 1935 when it was home to Sheppard's Garage. Note the old clock-face gas pumps on the curb for pull-up service. Today, the former garage is home to Ocean City Storage and We R Wireless. Hi Florence, is it the one that can be seen to the left of the garage? I remember the statue had a full headress and was probably a little over six feet tall so that might be the same one...thanks for noticing!!!   more ›

Then and Now

Historical Images: Two Views of the 700 Block of Asbury Avenue 90 Years Apart

A new weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features a view of the 700 block of Asbury Avenue from the top of the Crown Bank building at Eighth Street and Asbury Avenue.  The first photo shows the bustling downtown and north end of the island in the late 1920s. The second photo shows the view in August 2010. If you look closely, you will notice a number of the buildings on the bay side of Asbury Avenue are still there today. Then and Now

Images of City Hall From June 1914, From Circa 1925 and From Today

A new weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

Ocean City's historic City Hall was designed by a local architect, Vivian Smith, who also designed the Flanders Hotel. The first photo shows City Hall under construction in June 1914. When it opened on New Year's Day in 1915, the ground floor was home to the Ocean City Police Department, complete with eight jail cells, as well as the Fire Department.  In the second picture of City Hall, note the World War I memorial that is on the corner as well as the water fountain. The memorial was moved to Veteran's Park at Sixth Street and Wesley Avenue in 1947 after World War II. The water fountain, which was donated to the city in 1912 by the Women's Christian Temperance Union, remains on the corner. City Hall is on the National Register of …

Then and Now

Historical Images: St. Peter's United Methodist Church

Our weekly feature includes photographs from the Ocean City Historical Museum collection and from the modern era.

This week's "Then and Now" features St. Peter's United Methodist Church, located on the northeast corner of Eighth Street and Central Avenue. St. Peter's was established in October 1880 and was named the St. Peter’s Methodist Episcopal Church of Ocean City. Later the name was changed to the First Methodist Episcopal Church and at its 100th Anniversary in 1980, renamed St. Peter’s United Methodist Church of Ocean City.  In the first image, the congregation's original house of worship, built in 1890, is shown circa 1900. The second image shows the current church under construction during the cornerstone laying ceremony in 1908. The dedication services were held on July 4, 1909.
