Volunteers are the glue that holds our special events together. During First Night, for example, more than 80 volunteers work at the various entertainment venues to keep things running smoothly. One of our "Super Volunteers," Susan Canale, a woman who has been invaluable to Ocean City for more than 30 years, passed away on Dec. 23. A long-time resident of Huntingdon Valley, Pa., Sue established a residence here in 1987. Immediately, this amazing lady became active in the community, eventually devoting thousands of hours to organizing and directing some of our most important special events. These included Night In Venice, the Baby Parade, the Easter Parade, the Woofin’ Paws Pet Fashion Show, the Doo Dah Parade and the Trail of Two Cities. …

South-end resident John Thornton, a teacher at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, passed along a link to his latest creation: an eight-minute film showing his journey through First Night and First Day in Ocean City as 2011 turned to 2012. The tagline on his YouTube posting is as follows: "As usual, Ocean City New jersey had a wonderful First Night celebration. I bookended said celebration with a couple of Polar Bear Plunges into the Atlantic Ocean. During my second plunge, I was accompanied by a pair of Emmas. Musical groups included Peter Tork & Shoe Suede Blues, the Cape Shore Chorale, Bubby Fann Gospel Choir, Broadway By Request, and Zydeco-a-go-go. No Emmas were harmed in the making of this film." Thornton first came to the attention…

About 1,000 people 'plunge' into the Atlantic Ocean during Ocean City's First Day celebration on Jan. 1, 2012.
The beach at Ninth Street in Ocean City saw huge crowds on Sunday, Jan 1, as more than 500 people started the new year by taking a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. Thousands more watched from the sand, and yet thousands more jammed the Boardwalk on a warm winter afternoon as part of Ocean City's annual First Day celebration. Sunny skies, light winds and a high temperature in the mid-50s made for ideal conditions. And at 49.6 degrees, the ocean water temperature was more than 10 degrees warmer than it was last winter at this time. The First Day celebration included Boardwalk entertainment, a 5-kilometer race and downtown shopping. It followed the 20th anniversary of Ocean City's First Night celebration. Monica Chrisanthon passed along this photograph of her granddaughter, Lilly Viscariello, 17 months old, who came to Ocean City to celebrate the holidays with her great-grandparents Nick and Nikki Chrisanthon, ages 87 and 88. Nick and Nikki have been year round-residents since 1987, and Monica's family has a summer home in Ocean City. Lilly cut her Christmas tree down in Wernersville, PA, and brought it with her to Monica's house at 31st Street and Simpson Avenue, where Santa visited. Now, Monica says, Lilly is getting ready for tomorrow, picking out which events she is going to attend for First Night. See the Ocean City Patch guide to First Night and First Day.

The speed of success: 0 to 10,000 in just two decades as the New Year's Eve celebration marks its 20th anniversary.
During the inaugural First Night celebration in 1992, a policeman told Ocean City Public Relations Director Mark Soifer, "I've never seen this many people in Ocean City on New Year's Eve." Twenty years later, First Night organizers are preparing to cap sales of admission buttons at 10,000 and welcome thousands more as part of a two-day First Night/First Day celebration that has become a highlight of Ocean City's event calendar. __________ How to purchase First Night admission buttons __________ "It extends the season, fills hotels, fills restaurants and stores," said Michele Gillian, Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce …
