Letter to Editor: Workshop on Fire Dept. (Mostly) Respectful and Productive
Ocean City resident Jim Tweed commends City Council and the mayor's administration on conducting a public workshop on Fire Department staffing.
To the Editor: I hate to talk shop about my own profession, but I love to listen to other people talk about theirs. It’s like being introduced to a new world. The City Council workshop on the fireman/EMT issue was fascinating because we heard various perspectives on a given set of facts. Our City Council did what the best legislative bodies under the Faulkner Act are supposed to do: oversight. Everyone understands Council does not have the authority to specify appropriations under the Faulkner Act. But if someone tries to tell you Council is violating the Act by fact-finding and conducting public workshops, know that person has simply misinterpreted the law. At best, they don’t know any better. At worst, they fear continuing the debate …

Jim, Yes; look at the FD but AFTER looking at other areas first. That's my very point. My only point. And yes, I see other irrational posts on the Patch. Yes; this is my last post on the subject as well. Regardless of how much the FD cost, how important is this service? Keith and Scott should show the public where other cutbacks/givebacks have be made BEFORE looking to the FD ... a total package …   more ›
