A recent study ranked Ocean City as the single best market in the country for independent retailers, based on an absence of national chain stores.

The single best location in America for independent retailers facing limited competition from national chains is Ocean City, according to a recent study. The Indie City Index—www.IndieCityIndex.com—looked at 363 metropolitan areas and 120,000 retailers to quantify the absence of national chain retailers and identify how much of the local retail market is available to independent sellers. The index, prepared by the firm Civic Economics, “represents the relative health of the independent retail sector as indicated by the share of retail sales available to the independents,” according to the study, which looked at databases for both retail locations and sales by sector to create the index.
