Letter From Mayor: Update on Work to Revise FEMA Flood Maps

Mayor Jay Gillian and a consulting firm are working with FEMA to make sure "V Zones" reflect reality.

Mayor Jay Gillian posted his weekly open letter to citizens on Friday, and this edition outlines the measures an outside consulting firm is taking to revise the flood zones designated on the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) maps for Ocean City. The maps could have potentially dramatic effects on required building elevations and flood insurance premiums. May 10, 2013 Dear Friends: The City has recently received a progress report from our coastal engineering consulting firm, Atkins, NA.  This firm was retained to review and analyze FEMA’s Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) Maps for Ocean City.  The objective is to work with FEMA toward having the next set of maps that are released much more …

Letter From Mayor: City Now Has Team to Answer Flood Map and FEMA Questions

In a March 1 update, Mayor Jay A. Gillian outlines Ocean City's actions on the Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps.

March 1, 2013  Dear Friends,  At the beginning of February, I posted a letter expressing the city’s concerns regarding FEMA’s new Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps.  I wanted to provide an update on the city’s actions since early February.    The city has now developed a specific customer-service team dedicated to assisting with questions about flood maps, FEMA and storm assistance. This consultant is well-versed in land use and the city’s ordinances.  We are hopeful that these employees can assist residents, businesses and …

In an open letter to citizens, Mayor Jay Gillian says "the ABFE maps are seriously flawed."

Mayor Jay Gillian posted an open letter to citizens on Friday that outlines the city's plans to oppose the adoption of new advisory flood maps by the State of New Jersey. The text of the letter follows (it also references a Frequently Asked Questions resource on City of Ocean City website): February 8, 2013  RE: FEMA / ADVISORY BASE FLOOD ELEVATION MAPS Dear Friends:  My Administration has been carefully reviewing the ramifications of FEMA’s Advisory Base Flood Elevation (ABFE) Maps and Governor Christie’s recent adoption of them for the entire state.  The ABFE Maps are seriously flawed and inaccurate for many parts of our community. They are, by FEMA’s own admission, based on incomplete data and analysis.  I am aware of the serious …

Beware of local contractors who are advising their "neighbors" and won't give out their proposals in writing. I met with the "local" neighborly contractor who showed so much concern on the patch...he won't give out his proposal in writing because he feels you will show it to other contractors. He also said he has his own lift equipment but when pressed could not tell us where it was on a job at …   more ›
