Where are the Ocean City voters? Not one voter in Ward 4 District 1 as of 7:15 AM.
Stan duzy June 3, 2014 at 07:17 am
One voter just came in - we're on a roll now.
Eleanor May 20, 2014 at 08:32 am
Hard to take seriously the comments of people who use foul language on a public forum. As a residentRead More of Ocean City I can say that the decline came in two "waves" - the first one was in the mid 70s to mid-80s when people were pushed by realtors and the new medium of real estate radio programs to sell their summer homes and seaside cottages to developers. Sometimes they would build 2,3,4 units on a lot that had held a single family home and take one unit for themselves but more often they would move away. What year round people did these attract? Young families looking to rent until they could afford to buy and retirees. The second wave - and the one that really ate into the year round population IMHO was the push to build the high school with the promise that it would be a big draw for families with kids. But the already high house prices and taxes took off and those renter families from Wave #1 moved off the island so that they could afford a home and still send their kids to OCHS. Sandy was the final straw for people and businesses that had been thinking of moving out for a while. So now we have a decimated population and proposals from council like building "coastal cottages" and saying OC could be a commuter destination and you call the lower vote getters "sour grapes" and "conspiracy theorists"? I don't think so. I think the reasons people leave and the reasons people are not moving in is very clear and there is no conspiracy about it.
Frank May 20, 2014 at 10:17 am
Eleanor - also keep in mind the population in New Jersey is also decreasing.
Bill Hartranft May 20, 2014 at 07:19 pm
Our history in Ocean city began decades ago when we rented for two weeks a year and brought down ourRead More family..5 kids.. and loved it. Bought a fixer upper in 98 at the bottom of the market through Marilynn Booth who helped us for many years through rentals....that is now our home. Total rehab..... Moved permanently in 2007 and never regretted it. This is a great place to live. Don't believe me, try Phila today... Lot of stone throwing going around but with a life time in Phila and a short stint in Oaklyn...believe me...this town may need some tweaking but my honey and I believe we've died and gone to heaven. It all has to do with history, outlook and ...well, how lucky we are to be able to be here...and comfortable. So while some may toss some evil stones at my stirring the pot, off the wall sense of humor, my reality is...I'm ok with all that.. because I firmly believe I have the world by the butt and I know it.
Ocean City Councilman Keith Hartzell was the leading vote-getter in Tuesday night's council elections.
vic May 14, 2014 at 01:47 pm
the party at the flanders was a celebration for the people who actively helped in the election.Read More they worked hard and successfully and they deserved it.
AB May 14, 2014 at 04:23 pm
This is a public office. You should at least invite the people who vote for you (most won't comeRead More anyway). Other candidates do this. You shouldn't have to be part of the in crowd.
Frank May 14, 2014 at 07:30 pm
Thank you Kevin - these people will find anything and everything to criticize. Yes - if you areRead More curious I was at the party :)
Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian signs in before voting Tuesday afternoon.
Patches O'Houlihan May 13, 2014 at 10:22 am
Council is always dysfunctional and a new addition to that would not matter. However, changing theRead More mayor is required if competent effective leadership is desired. Presently there are council members that think they are mayor and more are running on the same platform. Citizens should vote for council candidates that will fill their intended role and a mayor that understands how to lead. This is all a pipe dream with the degree of disfunction in Ocean City government and aspiring council.
Frank May 13, 2014 at 10:40 am
Patches none of that is the case.
Patches O'Houlihan May 13, 2014 at 04:54 pm
Define Irony: The city uses an attorney that specializes in real-estate, not one that specializes isRead More municipal matters. The city is then involved in questionable real-estate related actions on a regular basis. I'm not expecting perfection, just get in the ball park. This is the dysfunction I point to. Again, just grab some popcorn and watch the show. Its not going to change with this list of characters. If the results of the show were not so serious it would almost be funny.
Maggie Stern May 12, 2014 at 06:27 pm
agree…………….the new guys should all get in
lovesmancos May 12, 2014 at 07:57 pm
No, you're wrong on that now. YEAR round people have left this town in droves. So there really areRead More NOT that many qualified people around left to play politics. The ones that did care left! The ones that stay however should probably be representing more the property owners of their constituency...the ones that are mostly from out of town...who should be keeping very close tabs on what's going on here, even when they can't be here! Just some wild thoughts on the eve of what should be a no-brainer landslide. No need to take me seriously, of course.
Maggie Stern May 13, 2014 at 06:52 am
Hyson, Sauder and Madden…………….vote them in
Frank May 13, 2014 at 04:08 pm
Michael - that is soooo far from the truth.
vic May 13, 2014 at 06:45 pm
Michael, reading your comment shows how clueless your are. you are just a Gillian hater. the guy'sRead More father gives him $10,000 for his election, but because his father no longer lives in ocean city, but has moved to florida, that amount now exceeds the amount that he is allowed to give his son. when the error was found, mayor Gillian returned the money to his father and issued an amended report. that really makes me think what he is willing to do to win and what he is going to do when, not if, he is re-elected.
Patches O'Houlihan May 14, 2014 at 06:24 am
Next time I want to see 2 OCHS graduates, that are also "nice guys," and see what theRead More voters do. Not that I'm a fan, but you could run Ronald Reagan against an OCHS graduate and he would not beat the "home town boy."

Another Boring Candidate Event. Leaving the decision as to what questions are important to ask inRead More both the Council and Mayoral debates to Mr. Barr and Mr. McCall is wrong. The inane questions are designed to prevent the public from getting to know the challengers and thus strengthens the incompetents. For these insider questioners dredging would appear to be the biggest issue and all candidates are expected to appear very concerned. If boats are too big to get through the lagoons get a kayak. The only way to have meaningful candidate venues is to have the public directly question them. Then Mr. McCall can be the timekeeper ( 30 seconds/ citizen question) and the Honorable Mr. Barr's role should be to maintain civility of the citizens and candidates. How did Democracy get to such a sorry state in OC?
Eleanor May 8, 2014 at 04:42 pm
Today I was listening to 1400 again and they announced that Ed Price would be on at 3, so I kept itRead More on because i did not want to sit thru a boring non debate. A couple things he talked about were dredging, which is not just for boaters but also to help keep flood levels down in the back bay areas. He seemed to have a good handle on what is involved in dredging and the obstacles. He also talked about the housing funding issue with Pecks Beach, explained the situation very clearly. He also said that Mayor Gillian may have violated campaign fund rules by accepting 10,000 from his father who resides out of the state. He used the term "illegal campaign contribution". I had read somewhere that Gillian had donated 25,000 to his own campaign, but never heard this before. I wish one of the local papers would get to the bottom of it. Overall I was pretty impressed. I don't know if you can get the 1400 AM shows online to listen to them.
Julie Baumgardner May 9, 2014 at 03:54 pm
Why do we call this a debate? This, just like the one for Council candidates was. Q&A session.Read More Repetitive and boring at that.

I hink If people research it modular homes will catch on. The city can not stop it, they make itRead More hard for induvals to build here but it can be done. Another point is the requirement to install sod and sprinklers. This adds over 7000 to the cost of a home. Seed and a hose are just as good.

Ed, we need the government to stop hassling average citizens. This tool if implemented incorrectly,Read More may cause residents to face lot of annoyance/harassment from the city. Bad idea.
AB April 21, 2014 at 04:07 pm
Let's figure out what we all can agree local government should do, and lets fund it. The people ofRead More 30th street shouldn't have to call the city to complain that their streets are flooded and blocked with barricades, and then be ignored. This is a disgrace.
OCLocal April 22, 2014 at 11:55 pm
No the people of 30th Street deserve for the rest of the taxpayers to pay millions so it doesn'tRead More flood in the lowest part of town.
Bill Hartranft April 15, 2014 at 04:46 pm
Kathy, truth be told my candidates are not in office yet. Wife and I went to the debate and foundRead More it informative. I had already thought about how I would vote, last night solidified my council votes and after watching Ed Price with his one man show.. he's my guy for mayor. I was impressed with Hyson's style, his grasp on the issues and thought Eric was in top form...even if I didn't especially like his sneaks. Have you ever considered being a cheerleader for Keith? Hmmm, maybe not... Actually, I was just yanking your chain....I do that.
Maggie Stern April 15, 2014 at 05:57 pm
Bottom line: Allegretto and Hartzel need to go!!!! OMG Allegretto is running for a 3rd term,Read More really??? How selfish and narcissistic. Keith says he is running because he loves the job. I try to watch the televised versions of Council meetings whenever I can and therefore I am quiteRead More shocked to hear any Council person other than Mr. Guinosso state that they are holding the mayor's feet to the fire. On the contrary this Council functions more like a rubber stamp where every meeting is a meeting of the mutual admiration society. Apparently, this Council is unaware of its oversight responsibilities as well as its responsibility to represent its constituents and not the administration. Time for a change at all levels.
Ed Price (Photo provided by Ed Price)
Frank April 15, 2014 at 04:32 pm

Kathy O'Connor April 15, 2014 at 05:11 pm
I agree about Pete Guinosso he is a good person who has the good of the town at heart the oneRead More and only who is on council for the right reasons but he is alone all alone the others - they are all out for themselves and they all cater to the realtors and the developers and they have ruined the town
Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian (Patch file photo)
vic April 16, 2014 at 06:58 pm
please don't try to use the argument that mayor Gillian has sold out the city to developers. thatRead More was done back in 2004 and 2005 when bud knight was the mayor. when Gillian became mayor it was a already a done deal. don't forget, he was only elected 4 years ago.
Kathy O'Connor April 16, 2014 at 07:29 pm
Has Mayor Gillian done anything at all to correct the situation? He is backed financially by theRead More biggest developer in Ocean City - his campaign manager is a realtor. The City council is set up to go along with him and his backers on everything and anything they want. There are supposed to be checks and balances in this city but the city council, except for Pete Guinosso is a puppet for the administration who is a puppet for the Mayor's financial backer - the biggest and most prosperous developer in town. (my opinion, of course) Vic - you can cheerlead all you want for the status quo and hopefully you will get a pat on the head for your efforts but it doesn't change the facts. City council - is in the pocket of the administration. The administration is in the pocket of the developers and realtors so until that changes, OC will continue the downward spiral it is on. But the few who have prospered, will continue - watch him - watch them. I hope these people understand that they may be fooling some - like you, Vic. But the rest of us - and that number is growing - can see exactly what is going on - you guys fool only a few. This is Not rocket science.
Kathy O'Connor April 16, 2014 at 07:37 pm
And, Mr. oh so Clean OC You know what some realtors are - right? you know above all. and you knowRead More that some people who "serve their community" are just doing it to gain some kind of prestige because they see themselves climbing the political ladder- they do so called charitable work - only to self promote you know the kind of people who do that and so do we. These guys who do that - they are so transparent. And no matter how far they think they have climbed, what they have done in the past is on paper and in emails and is evidence of their true nature. You understand, don't you? I am sure you do, Mr. oh so clean oc.

Why is it frank and Vic have for years been on the patch insulting everyone that dares to disagreeRead More with them. They seem to have cornered the market on knowledge. They really should find something to do with their time. Seek gainful employment. I don t know how anyone has so much free time on their hands. I guess their statements that we have no jobs here, rings true. At least none for internet trolls. I hope the mayor kicks you some of those millions he's inherited. His minions are in need.

joe, I'm afraid that you might have some of your facts mixed up. our mayor, jay Gillian, neverRead More appointed his wife to any position. she was the executive director of the chamber of commerce before he was elected mayor. in any case the chamber of commerce is independent of the ocean city government and fills it's positions without any approval from either city council or city administration.

Hey Mike, good luck... I also question salaries in Ocean City. While I would never want toRead More financially hurt anyone who's working today, I'd like to see salaries brought in line with the medium wage . Only way to do that is to establish a target figure for each job (+/- some percentage point) then freeze salaries until the point is met. The thought is, would you pay $6.00 for a loaf of bread if it sells for $4.00 elsewhere?
