Community Center Plans 'Fridays With Friends' for Local Teens

The free program will provide a safe place for teens to hang out on weekend nights.

The Ocean City Community Center will be open to area teens on six Friday nights this winter as part of a new "Fridays With Friends" program that will include music, movies, workout programs, swimming and just hanging out together.

The first "Friday With Friends" will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at the Community Center (1735 Simpson Avenue).

Subsequent dates are Jan. 24, Feb. 7 and 21, March 7 and 21.

The event is for Ocean City and  Upper Township students 14 to 18 years old. Teens must show their school identification, but there is no cost to participate.

For three hours, the area teens will be able to hang out with friends and choose from listening to music, watching a movie, playing Xbox Kinect, taking a workout class and jumping in the pool, among other activities. Yianni’s Cafe will stay open until 9 p.m., and participants will be able to purchase energy drinks and other snacks.

Week 1 will feature a disc jockey, pizza, hot dogs and snacks. The DJ will spin tunes 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Senior Center, then play in the pool area from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. (Don’t forget your suit). The highlighted workout will be Surfset Fitness from 7:30 to 8:30. p.m. Xbox Kinect will be set up in the library 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Two DVD choices will be available in the lounge area.

Week 2 will include a movie in the library auditorium, another workout program and an open mic night at Yianni’s. (See attached PDF for full schedules.)

  • Ocean Cty Free Public Library
  • Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center
  • Ocean City Recreation
