Volunteers Needed for Fall Beach Sweep on Saturday

The Ocean City Environmental Commission and Clean Ocean Action (COA) are sponsoring a on Saturday, October 22 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  The Commission invites all residents, students, organizations and families to join the semiannual “counted cleanup” sweep along the beaches in Ocean City.
 
Clean Ocean Action uses data cards to record the litter collected and enters the information into a national database of marine debris.  Participants form teams of two or three people to pick up and record the litter on the beach.
 
Environmental Commission members will assign volunteers to groups, distribute equipment and provide instructions at the , located at Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk.
 
In 1985, Clean Ocean Action launched the region’s first Beach Sweeps program to rid beaches of unsightly and harmful debris. COA’s program is one of the longest running cleanups of its kind in the world.  Since 1985, more than 70,000 volunteers have participated in the annual Beach Sweeps and removed more than 3 million pieces of debris from New Jersey’s beaches and waterways.
