Volunteers Needed for Beach Plum Planting on Sunday

The Ocean City Environmental Commission seeks help planting seedlings at noon Dec. 4 on the beach at 23rd Street.

The Ocean City Environmental Commission and the Clean Communities Program are looking for volunteers to help plant beach plum seedlings on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Volunteers are asked to meet at noon at the 23rd Street Beach and to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Volunteers are also asked to bring a small garden shovel if possible.

The beach plum—indigenous the East Coast shoreline from Maine to Virginia—complements dune grass in protecting dune systems from erosion. The roots of the plant help hold dunes in place. The beach plum thrives in hostile environments of high salt, high wind and low nutrients.
