Photo Gallery: Volunteer Cleanup on MLK Day in Ocean City

Volunteers pitch in to clean beaches, parks and playgrounds on the annual day of service.

The citywide cleanup on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Ocean City continues to grow each year.

About 135 to 140 volunteers signed up to participate in the fourth annual event on Monday (Jan. 16), and several others contributed. Last year's event attracted 108 volunteers. Light winds and a sunny sky made for ideal conditions for this year's event.

The event brings together families, individuals and groups in a day of service in memory of King. Volunteers met at 9 a.m. at the Henry S. Knight building on 12th Street to receive trash bags and assigned locations. The groups then fanned out to participate in the cleanup from 10 a.m. noon, covering beaches, bayfronts, parks and playgrounds throughout Ocean City.

Volunteers reported collecting everything from dog poop (collected in plastic bags by dog owners but then apparently left on the beach) to cigarette butts and plenty of cans and bottles.

Ocean City High School provided a lot of the muscle with the Ecology Club, Key Club, Student Council and National Honor Society participating.
