Does Tylenol Cause ADHD?

A new study found a correlation between the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy and ADHD.

A long-term study of more than 64,000 children has raised concerns that extended use of medications with acetaminophen could increase the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The study by UCLA and the University of Aarhus in Denmark found an increased likelihood of ADHD  nearly doubled when mothers used the painkiller for more than 20 weeks during pregnancy, UCLA's website reported.

The study was published in JAMA Pediatrics. Children and mother's were enrolled from 1996 to 2002 and at each trimester mothers were asked if they had used acetaminophen, Fox News reported. The study followed up with the same women when their children were 7 years old and asked about behavioral patterns and prescription rates of medicines such as Ritalin.

Forbes reported that the study found that the chances a child would end up being prescribed an ADHD medication later on rose by 50 percent. The story noted that acetaminophen – the active ingredient in medications such as Excedrin and Tylenol – can cross the placenta and make its way to the fetus.

The authors of the study state that it is plausible that acetaminophen could interrupt fetal brain development by interfering with maternal hormones or through neurotoxicity.

However, Forbes notes that the study could not establish "causation," only a correlation between the use of acetaminophen and later behavior problems.

there is no correlation between ADHD and TYLENOL that's because ADHD is a made up disease made up in 1964. come on people !!!! do your homework do the research. not all of you can be idiots.

@Jonathan - perhaps you have taken too much Tylenol and it is true that it causes ADHD - I clearly stated "sugary garbage has as more to do with kids and ADHD, then Tylenol." MEANING Tylenol has little, if anything, to do with ADHD. It's probably more common because of the food we eat, our lifestyles and/or parenting. Not confusing at all really.

It is easy to establish correlation. I can say that there is a correlation between food stamp applications and the number of children diagnosed with ADHD. Over the last 5 years, as one went up, so did the other. But this correlation is useless as is the premise of the above article. For causation, you would have to say there is a relationship between the two components or a "cause and effect" relationship.

Shariah...how DID you get so lucky? Stop drinking the town water, broaden your horizons and do more research....you are obviously young and naive
Deke February 25, 2014 at 11:20 PM
As others have astutely observed here, correlation is not causation. The media, by and large, either does not understand that (completely), or overlooks it to create sensational headlines, which they hope lead to increased readership, which leads to higher advertising revenues. Sill, the correlation warrants further study.

it's like saying that since all people who have drunk water have, or will, die, then water drinking causes death.

I have a whole thread here on ADD and my mother took handfuls of of Tylenol and whatnot while pregnant with me and sometimes she'd leave me outside all day but I then I remember liking potato chips quite a lot and also swimming so I'd stay in the pool as much as possible when I wasn't reading because sometimes I'd do that also books can be friends and even then I'd spend some time with the pets even other people's pets but I don't think stealing is O.K. but I can concentrate many times that I really don't like wearing shoes during the summer months so saying that it could might be a link to anything that might cause high levels of distraction is ....... O HEY LOOK! A chicken!

People are now going to start again with the whole its not real thing so I say again ADD is totally real it must be but I probably only have it a little because I can completely focus when I want to but maybe people are boring so much of the time so it's not me it's them and I say this as a person who isn't suffering really but I cannot be expected to stay focused enough to tie my own shoes and then be expected to make and eat breakfast if it's BORING however those gluten-free waffles are pretty damn good and when you put butter and syrup on them you really can't tell they aren't REAL waffles however they sorta cease to be even slightly good for anyone let alone me because I REALLY like butter and probably use too much I have all my life but I still look pretty good for my age I mean I exercise and shit people always think I am younger but that might be because I've been told I am kinda immature when it comes to some topics I am sorry but farts are still funny no matter how old you get they just ARE so I guess maybe what you call just bad behavior or not being raised right is valid from your POV but I really do seem to have this race car brain and your close-minded assertion that it's not real and it's made up totally fly in the face of all the research that has been done for the real cases of ADD and the problems that arise OUT of ADD so some people say my parents should have "disciplined" me better so I wouldn't be "like this" well they did and it was awful because they beat me and it didn't make me less ADD at all but it did make me mistrustful of a lot of people especially people that look like my dad or mom because they were really scary when I was 8, but not so much now because one is dead so he cannot be scary unless he was a zombie which would be utterly TERRIFUCKINGFYING but since that can't happen I won't worry about him but I guess if I saw my mom NOW she'd be really old and I could probably take her in a clean fist fight so guess maybe I am over being beaten as a young child that ate way too much butter but ended up pretty happy most of the time and not too out of shape or hideous so in closing I'll say ADD is totally real and I'll kick the butt of anyone who says it isn't because thats how I can prove it....I am SO hungry right now

Does Tylenol Cause ADHD? in your mom?
rubberband February 27, 2014 at 08:49 PM

A maternal insult (also referred to as a "yo mama" joke) is a reference to a person's mother through the use of phrases such as "your mother" or other regional variants, frequently used to insult the target by way of their mother.[1] Used as an insult, "your mother..." preys on widespread sentiments of filial piety, making the insult particularly and globally offensive. "Your mother" can be combined with most types of insults, although suggestions of promiscuity are particularly common.[2] Insults based on obesity, incest, age, race, poverty, poor hygiene, unattractiveness, or stupidity may also be used. Compared to other types of insults, "your mother" insults are especially likely to incite violence.[3] Slang variants such as "yo mama", "yo momma", "yer ma", "ya mum", "your mum" or "your mom" are sometimes used, depending on the local dialect. Insults involving "your mother" are commonly used when playing the dozens. Although the phrase has a long history of including a description portion (such as the old, mostly harmless insult "your mother wears combat boots"), the phrase "yo mama" by itself, without any qualifiers, has become commonly used as an all-purpose insult[1] or an expression of defiance.

William Shakespeare used such a device in Act I Scene 1 of Timon of Athens: ________________________________________________ Painter: "Y'are a dog." Apemantus: "Thy mother's of my generation. What's she, if I be a dog?" Also in Act IV, Scene II of Titus Andronicus, Aaron taunts his lover's sons: ________________________________________________ Titus Andronicus Demetrius: "Villain, what hast thou done?" Aaron: "That which thou canst not undo." Chiron: "Thou hast undone our mother." Aaron: "Villain, I have done thy mother."

I'm back!!! ah..... for the first time too!
Fortified- AKA Carlos Danger March 21, 2014 at 04:39 AM
SERIOUSLY. ADD and "a made up disease". I grew up, somehow with the dead serious idea I can't blame anything on anyone else, or blame some condition. I have only been to the doctors a handful of times in my life. Being told as an adult I have had ADD my whole life, I laughed at it. Not really sure their is such a thing, and not being able to blame anything... I scoffed at it. I would say things like "they tried to tell me I had"....or I really don't believe in it but my life just parallels it 200%...(and laugh it off). No way, I am not going to become a victim here. But the other side of me that KNEW. The first second I realized ...The first moment I could at least touch a tangible reason why their were literally 10,000 times in grade school were I said to myself, "from this exact moment on, I will concentrate, and never lose what the teacher is saying, without it EVER working. I knew why I couldn't get the homework done..but when I was on my Asthma medicine, I could get three days of homework done in two hours. Why I couldn't remember what I read, but on my Asthma medicine, I spent eight hours straight memorizing a book. I got 80 pages, and scared myself, Why I couldn't follow what the teacher said, but when she sent me down to spend a week in the principles office, I learned for the first time, I don't need a teacher to learn. I studied how the books had universal steps for each chapter, and did the whole weeks work by Tuesday afternoon. Why, when I transferred to a different high school I was given An IQ test because my grades were low. She concluded I was a little behind in English, but I rated borderline genius in logic. And as older, why I went to circuit city to by an appliance, and driving around to the pick up......well, I was halfway home before I realized I didn't pick it up. The circuit city trip situation is common. It all made 100% perfect sense. Yes the other part of me knew, and it was one of the best days in my life when I found out. I call myself A retarded genius, only because the things that is common in most, is different than my common. Remembering names, spelling, sticking to a list,....no. Everything I do, I learned by myself. I might be able to build A house, Re-glorify a 1926 Craftsman to exact original beauty, or make more than a doctor, (and lose more), But their is no way in hell I'm going to sit in a classroom and listen to someone explain it all day. I'll get it faster on my own. (If I don't drop the whole idea), And thank god for computers with spelling. So, Yes their really is ADD, absolutely. However, it is also over diagnosed, and drugs given to freely. ADD for those who don't have it, you will not understand this but, if I could wish it away, I wouldn't! Life is more of a joy for people with ADD. Heck, look at Rubberband. He has more joy than anyone here!! And as for tylon...spellcheck please..as for Tylenol, or Tylenol P.M. with a little booz, will start ripping your stomach and liver apart.
rubberband March 21, 2014 at 03:51 PM
