Arctic Cold Settles In Over Ocean City

Ocean City doesn't get much snow but it gets plenty of bitterly cold weather.

Ocean City dodged the worst of a winter snowstorm on Tuesday night, but bitterly cold temperatures are expected to remain throughout the week.

A wind chill advisory remains in effect on Wednesday with a temperature of 8 degrees (at 10 a.m.) and northwest winds gusting at more than 30 mph. Wind chills could dip as low as -15 on Wednesday and will remain sub-zero through Friday.

The Ocean City School District cancelled Wednesday classes. Richard Stockton College is closed today, and many businesses are opening late. The Ocean City Aquatics and Fitness Center and the Ocean City Free Public Library will be open on a regular schedule.

Ocean City and the coastal region of southern New Jersey saw only 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation after some predictions of two or three times that amount. Some areas of New Jersey and Pennsylvania along the I-95 corridor saw more than a foot.

The Ocean City Police Department reported no major accidents or incidents. But the roads remain slick on Wednesday with a hard pack of snow and ice covering most roads. Ocean City Fire Chief Chris Breunig reported no major activity overnight.

The National Weather Service forecast calls for high temperatures of 18 degrees on Wednesday, 25 on Thursday and 24 on Friday. Northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will continue through Friday.

The temperature is expected to crack the freezing mark on a partly sunny Saturday with a high of 38 degrees.

Not everybody in Ocean City was taking shelter on Wednesday morning. The coastal storm, offshore winds and the day off school made for ideal conditions for a small handful of local surfers who enjoyed some beautiful overhead surf.
