Ocean City Paddler Wins Six-Mile Race in Strathmere

Bruckner Chase takes the paddleboard title in the Upper Township Beach Patrol MS Six-Mile Bay Row.

Ocean City paddlers and rowers fared well in the Upper Township Beach Patrol MS Six-Mile Bay Row on Tuesday, July 26.

Bay Avenue resident Bruckner Chase, 45, won the open division and overall title in the paddleboard event in 56:18. Ocean City Beach Patrol's Tony Mehalic, 28, was second overall. And OCBP competitor Dan Callaghan was third overall and first in the division for 12-foot beach patrol competition boards.

About 50 rowers and 10 paddlers competed in a bay course of about 5.2 miles near the Deauville Inn in Strathmere.

Ocean City Beach Patrol doubles crew Andrew Mockaitis and Dylan Kosten finished fourth in the row, and an OCBP alumni boat of Matt Garbutt and Bob Garbutt Jr. finished fifth.

Chase said the biggest challenge in the event was not the distance or the heat but the greenheads.

He wore 1-millimeter neoprene leggings to keep the bugs at bay.
