Ocean City Honors Championship Little League Team

Ocean City's 11- and 12-year-olds won a district championship in Little League baseball.

City Council on Thursday recognized the achievements of the District 16 Little League baseball championship team from Ocean City.

Mayor Jay Gillian read a proclamation honoring the 11- and 12-year-olds for winning the first district title in the 57-year history of the Ocean City Youth Athletic Association.

Former OCYAA President Greg Donahue presented a plaque donated by Schoppy Trophies owner and baseball fan Dave Talarico.

Donahue said that Talarico offered the gift not only because the team had talent and success, but because they are a class act.

"Your character will always be with you," Donahue said, noting that their athleticism may fade.

Manager Harry Vanderslice introduced team members as they shook hands with City Council members.

The city earlier recognized Ocean City Business Administrator Mike Dattilo for his 40 years of dedication to the OCYAA.

Mayor Jay Gillian presented him with a home plate — "because he always had trouble getting there."
