Tiffany Prettyman Appointed to Fill Vacant School Board Seat

The former Board of Education member will replace Antwan McClellan, who joins City Council on July 1.

A former member will return to the Ocean City Board of Education to fill the seat that will be vacated when Antwan McClellan moves to City Council on July 1.

Tiffany Prettyman was appointed by the Board of Education in a 6-1 vote on Wednesday night. She will serve until Jan. 1 — when the candidate chosen in the November 2012 election takes office.

Prettyman served on the board for three years until 2010. She is a social studies teacher at Mainland Regional High School, parent of two Ocean City schoolchildren (seventh-grader Phoebe and fourth-grader Chloe) and wife of Ocean City Police Capt. Jay Prettyman.

The board interviewed Prettyman and two other candidates — Jacqueline McAllister and James McGinley — during a special meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The board went into executive session to discuss the interviews and returned to public session to vote.

Board member Lloyd Hayes cast the dissenting vote on Prettyman's nomination.

In her interview, Prettyman said she can bring multiple perspectives to the job — as a parent, a teacher and a former board member.

She said Wednesday that she didn't know yet if she would consider a run for a full three-year term in the November election.

McClellan was re-elected to his second term on the Board of Education in April 2011. He was elected as the Second Ward representive on City Council on May 8 and will resign his school board post when he takes office on July 1.
