School Board Celebrates Championship Teams in Fall Sports

Seven Ocean City teams accounted for two state titles, three South Jersey championships and four conference titles.

The Ocean City Board of Education on Wednesday recognized the achievements of fall sports teams, and this year's Red Raider squads provided plenty to celebrate: two state titles, three South Jersey championships and four conference titles.

Seven teams combined to give Ocean City an 83-29-1 record for all fall sports. Four coaches were named "Coach of the Year" by The Press of Atlantic City (Aaron Bogushefsky in boys soccer, Kelly Halliday in girls soccer, Trish Henry in girls cross country and Matt Purdue in boys cross country).

In the final second of the 2013 season, Kelly Hanna scored a goal to break an overtime tie and give Ocean City its second consecutive state Group III title in field hockey. After a 5-3 start, the Red Raiders finished 19-6 and earned their 12th South Jersey championship along the way.

The boys soccer team knocked off perennial nemesis Timber Creek to earn a South Jersey championship. The Red Raiders lost in overtime in the state semifinal.

The girls cross country team won a South Jersey Group III championship, and senior Bridget Flynn (who will attend Dartmouth next year) was the individual state Group III champion.

The boys cross country team, unbeaten in dual meets since 2008, won a Cape-Atlantic League title and finished third in South Jersey Group III.

The girls soccer team finished 11-4 and won a Cape-Atlantic League title.
