Ocean City Schools to Open Two Hours Late on Thursday

Arctic cold delays school day on Thursday, Jan. 23.

The Ocean City School District on Wednesday evening announced a two-hour delayed opening for the start of the school day on Thursday, Jan. 23, due to the weather.

All before-school programs are cancelled.

There is no snow in the forecast for Wednesday night, but Thursday wind chill values are expected to dip as low as -6 degrees with air temperatures in the single digits and west winds at 13 to 16 mph.

The arctic temperatures will likely freeze roadways that were covered by snow during a Tuesday night storm that left 3 to 4 inches of accumulation across the region.

The high temperature will reach only 24 degrees in Ocean City on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The extreme cold is expected to continue through the middle of next week — with brief periods of this weekend and Monday providing the only chance for the mercury to rise above the freezing mark.
