The Ocean City High School boys' junior varsity eight crew team dedicated their national title to a local woman battling cancer, ocnjdaily.com reports.

Coach John Miller cited Tara Millar, who is battling Stage 4 Melanoma, as inspiration during a pep talk. When the team couldn't meet her in person, she wrote them a note prior to their pursuit of a national title, according to the report.

Congrats to the OCHS crew team and coaches on their success on the water and in their hearts in finding inspiration from the very courageous story of Tara Miller. As a retired 30yr OCBP guard and Melanoma survivor, I believe the awareness concerning that cancer(#1) can not be overstated. It is incomprehensible to me the that in this day, a beach patrol administrator, would direct lifeguards to expose themselves to even greater skin damage from the sun. This goes on with the beach patrol, when top OCBP person Tom Mullineaux, directs guards to sit on top of the guard stand with zero shade, or float in the guard boat with the same. Parents and the loved ones of lifeguards, must insist that such totally unnecessary procedures end. The guards should refuse such directives, but that would put their job at risk for insubordination. Everyone who works on or just enjoys the beach must do all that they can to protect themselves from the dangers of sun exposure. I would hope all will read Tara's story, and support her foundation.

Tara Millar (not Miller), sorry for the typo.
