Ocean City Junior Raiders take on the Northfield Cardinals

The Ocean City Junior Raiders played their third game of the 2013 youth football season Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Carey Field at the Ocean City High School against the Northfield Cardinals.

    The Taxi squad (kindergarten through 2nd grade) opened up the action.  While no official score is kept at this level, the team played hard and the game was competitive.  The team is clearing translating what it learns in practice to the games.

    Next up was the Peewee team (3rd and 4th grade).  After falling behind 6-0 on an opening drive by Northfield that took up the entire first quarter and a good portion of the second quarter, the Junior Raiders fought back and began to take over the game.  Touchdowns were scored by Jacob Wilson on a long touchdown run and by Sean Mazzatelli on a quarterback sneak leading to a long run.  Coach Jim “the Man” Cupit commented that the defensive line had a great game, noting in particular the play of William Clee and Nate Wagner.  Both made key stops in a late defensive stand in the shadows of their own goalpost that preserved the 13-6 victory for the Junior Raiders.

    A very young JV team (5th and 6th grade) lost 25-0.  The Junior Raiders had a touchdown called back on its opening drive by a penalty and never could get its offense on track in the game.  After giving up two touchdown passes in the first half after which it found itself down 19-0 at halftime, the team tightened up in the second half and played hard.

    The Varsity team struggled in the first half of its game leading to a 35-0 halftime deficit.  The team never quit and the second half was a different story.  Touchdowns were scored on a short run by Jade Robinson and on a reception by Paulie Stryker which led to a final score of 35-13.

    Attendance at the games was once again terrific and the organization thanks all those who volunteered at concessions, setup, breakdown and in the press box during the games.
