Sandy Spikes Citywide Yard Sales for 2013

The semi-annual events will resume in 2014.

Ocean City's spring and fall Citywide Yard Sale events will not be held this year.

The semiannual events are typically held in April and October a week before the city's downtown Block Party celebrations. The event includes sellers who set up shop on the grounds of the Ocean City Tabernacle, where maps are made available to find other yard sales at private homes throughout Ocean City. The maps also are available at City Hall and the Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce.

But Ocean City Community Services Director Jim Mallon said on Thursday that the city and Paul Cunningham, president of Main Street Ocean City, have concerns about promoting an event in which material potentially "tainted" by Superstorm Sandy could trade hands. With record floodwaters soaking homes, furniture and belongings during the Oct. 29 storm, mold contamination is an ongoing concern.

Mallon said the Citywide Yard Sales will resume in 2014.

At last year's event, vendor locations at the Tabernacle were available for $30 and a spot on the citywide map cost $10. The event was organized in part by the executive director of Main Street Ocean City, a full-time position that was cut in the 2013 budget for the Ocean City Special Improvement District.
