Ocean City's 'To-Do' List for Fixing Roads, Beaches, Bays and Boardwalk

Ocean City's five-year capital plan offers a snapshot of planned improvements and maintenance to public property.

A beach to sit, a boardwalk to stroll, a bay to boat on — these are some of the things that make Ocean City real estate some of the most coveted in the state.

But keeping sand on the beaches and out of the bay, and keeping water in the ocean and off the streets can be a costly enterprise on a low-lying barrier island.

The city proposes to spend $50 million over the next five years to do just that. Half of it — $5 million a year for five years — will be dedicated exclusively to improving roads and drainage.

Mayor Jay Gillian's administration released its updated five-year capital plan at a public City Council workshop on Thursday evening at the Ocean City Free Public Library.

The plan provides updates to projects that are completed, in progress and planned. It covers both repairs related to Superstorm Sandy and regularly scheduled projects. It includes roads, beaches, bulkheads, boardwalk, bayside dredging, a skateboard park, recreational facilities and everything else related to public property.
