Mayor To Discuss Intermediate School Curb With Freeholder

County Engineer said that a no parking section on the Bay Avenue curb would likely increase speeding on the road.

Mayor Jay Gillian said on Saturday that he will meet with Cape May County Freeholder William Morey on Tuesday morning to discuss a no parking zone on Bay Avenue outside of the Ocean City Intermediate School, between 18th and 20th streets.

Gillian said that he wanted to install a no-parking zone outside of the school as a safety measure, to create better sightlines for pedestrians, adding that he wanted to be proactive and stop an accident before it happened.

According to an article in The Gazette, the county disagrees with Gillian's decision, and the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders voted on Thursday to urge the city to remove the yellow paint from the curb on Bay Avenue, which is a county road.

"I'm a big policy and procedure guy," said Gillian, but he used the example of parking changes during Night in Venice, saying that the city does not consult with the county during that annual event.

Gillian also said that there are state regulations that do call for parts of the road to be designated no-parking, but County Engineer Dale Foster said that, while there might be some state regulations that would apply to some of the area on that stretch of road, they do not apply for as long of a stretch as was designated by the city.

Foster also said on Saturday, after speaking at an , that, while introducing a no parking policy on the street would improve sightlines for pedestrians, it would also widen the road, which would lead to drivers increasing their speed.

Both Foster and Gillian expressed a desire to move forward.

"We just want to come up with a solution that works for everyone," said Foster.

Gillian said that it's time for everyone to "put their personalities aside and do what will work for the kids."

He also expressed surprise about the response to his actions.

"I didn't think it was that big of a deal...this just didn't come out of the blue, we've been working for years," he said. "For me, painting the lines, I thought that I was part of the team."

as usual this "mayor" thinks the city is his private business and he can just go and do as he feel not withstanding any rules and regulations, and for him to say he's a "rules and regulations guy? LMFAO, what a joke. now he is costing the taxpayers even more money, waste. Can't wait til' next election, adios amigo.

other things to consider: no parking means cars will now be more encouraged to pass on the right while a car is stopped allowing CHILDREN to cross, way to go Mayor, getting our children hurt.

I have worked with the county and they are great to work with as long as you discuss your plans in advance. During the building of the new Library, they could not have been any more cooperative, however they like everyone else like to be consulted. We worked cooperatively and not the way this was done. Shame on the city! I hope council will not approve the bill list on this issue!

Do you really think this would be the Mayors fault if some asshole passes on the right on bay ave. When its illegal to pass on the right anyway you make me lmfao

simmer down chuck, take a joke. but, the point is, he is still creating a MORE dangerous situation than was previously stated as his reason for not following the rules and taking it upon himself to paint the curbs.

And back to the teachers/staff losing parking? The residents around the school have already complained Befoe the crumbs were painted about their parking. The school superintendent said there are plans for a new parking lot, but, it will not be ready for the start of school. Considering that the faculty hasn't had a contract in almost two years, maybe this is a way to kill off a few expensive teachers.......Gillian and miz Taylor are buddies I hear.....

The Mayor can be amusing to watch. He talks about team work and then just goes and does what he wants. When he gets called on the carpet he either goes crazy or whines about how everybody's against him. I think things are pretty good here but the mayor needs to grow up.

typical narcissist, it's all about him.

He should never have been elected. I have no personal grudge against him, but clearly their is a conflict of interest just by him holding the office. As one of the largest business owners in town he makes policy that greatly effects his own wallet. Yes, all mayors make policy that to some extent effects them, but not like his situation.

There is no "team effort" here, what a joke!! This city has gotten to be such a dictatorship it's almost scarey. OCLOCAL is right! Hopefully a one time Mayor.
OC4EVER August 27, 2012 at 12:34 PM
I agree with surfsup, hopefully a one time mayor. His father did the same bs when he was mayor. Mayor Gillian treats the city as if it was he business and his money. Once again the taxpayers will pick up the bill as the incompentent mayor runs amuck and at the same time upsetting the county officials. Council should send Gillamco (wonderland) the bill for all expenses on this debacle.

since bay ave is a county road, there definitely should have been better communications between ocean city and the county. however, some people need a reality check. mr. gillian was overwhelmingly elected as mayor during the last election. and, if he chooses to run again, will easily win re-election. if not mr. gillian, who would you prefer to have as our mayor?
propertywatcher August 27, 2012 at 01:22 PM
Someone went crazy with the yellow paint all over this island.....it was there before our current Mayor. Look at the beach blocks. It's ridiculous! Anytime I've asked, I am told it's for the fire department......when is the last time you saw a fire engine parked nicely along the curb?
