Letter From Mayor: Swim at Guarded Beaches

In his weekly letter to citizens posted on the Ocean City website, Mayor Jay Gillian offers updates on beaches guarded by the Ocean City Beach Patrol and on safety reminders. 

Dear Friends:

Beginning tomorrow the Ocean City Beach Patrol will begin guarding seven additional beaches compared to last week, bringing the total number of guarded beaches  to twenty-one.  Additional beaches will be added each week through June 29th.  A complete list of guarded beaches can always be found at: www.ocnj.us or on our government access channel OCTV2 (channel 2 on the Comcast cable system.)

This season marks the 120th anniversary of bather protection here in Ocean City.  Our Beach Patrol has a rich history of outstanding service and safety. 

Their efforts can only be successful if our residents and visitors strictly adhere to the following reminders:

• Only bathe at guarded beaches.
• Never swim alone.
• Never drink alcohol before swimming.
• Always respect the power of the ocean and become knowledgeable about its dangers, especially rip tides.

An informational video regarding rip tides has been produced by the Beach Patrol and can be seen frequently on OCTV2.  I encourage you to view this video with your family to better understand how these dangerous conditions occur and what you should do if ever caught in a rip tide.

I would like to thank the outstanding men and women of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, past and present, for all they have done to enhance the reputation of “America’s Greatest Family Resort.”
