Letter From Mayor: Inspect Flooded Properties to Prevent Fires

Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian urges property owners to have properties inspected to avoid tragedies like the boardwalk fire in Seaside Heights.

Dear Friends:

I have discussed the recent tragic fire in Seaside Heights with my senior staff and construction code officials.

I am aware that many property owners have had their properties inspected for safety following Hurricane Sandy.  In light of the findings related to the cause of this fire, I am again requesting that those of you who had flood water in, under or around your property  have your property inspected by a qualified engineer, electrician or other professional without delay if you have not yet done so.

It is essential that any utilities that were damaged by salt water and/or sand be addressed immediately.  Professionals advise that problems can appear many months or even longer after the flooding.

This request is consistent with previous statements made by myself and others within the City since the storm, as well as the advice of professionals.

Thank you for your consideration.

Have a great weekend!

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
