Letter From Mayor: Enjoy Summer While It Lasts

In his weekly update, Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian also reminds people they can call his office with questions related to recovering from Superstorm Sandy.

Dear Friends:

This week marks the approximate mid-point of our core summer season.  July certainly brought us better weather than June. Now let’s hope Mother Nature keeps cooperating.

I’d like to again thank the city’s team members who have been doing their usual great job keeping the town clean, safe and family-friendly.  Our guests have seen for themselves that we were completely ready for the summer season due to the teamwork between the city, the business community, the residents and the property owners.

Having said that, we still must keep in mind that some people have yet to return to their homes and still face uncertainty in many ways.  The issues related to flood insurance, FEMA requirements, flood maps, building codes and more can be overwhelming.  My administration remains committed to doing everything we can to help people through this period.  If we are falling short in any way, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

On another note, don’t miss the 51st Annual Boardwalk Art Show this weekend.  Leading artists from throughout the country are displaying and selling their artwork today and Saturday until 8 pm and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the volunteers and city team members that made the Night in Venice celebration a success.  I’d also like to thank the Miss Night in Venice Pageant contestants for raising money for many local charities.

Lastly, be sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, August 8th and come out and enjoy one of the City’s oldest and most popular events, the Ocean City Baby Parade.  Long-time Ocean City resident and benefactor Peggy Lloyd, who will celebrate her 100th birthday in September, will be grand marshal of the City’s 104th Baby Parade. This traditional favorite has a new start time this year of 5pm and takes place on the boardwalk from 6th to 12th Streets.

Have a great weekend!

Warm Regards,

Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
