Letter From Mayor: City Is Ready for Night in Venice

Mayor Jay Gillian posts his weekly update to citizens.

Dear Friends:

Everything is set for our annual Night in Venice Celebration.  The boat route is from the Longport Bridge, along the bay front, through the lagoons and ending at Tennessee Avenue.  Grandstands are set up at most street ends from Battersea Road to 16th Street. The parade will begin at 6:00 pm.

I’d like to welcome Adam Joseph from WPVI Channel 6 to Ocean City.  Adam will serve as Grand Marshal of the boat parade.

This year we’re proud to partner with the John R. Elliott Hero Campaign which will have several boats in the parade saluting such heroes as our first responders and our military.  The Hero Campaign promotes the use of safe and sober designated drivers on land and water and was established by the family of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township.  Ensign Elliott was killed in July of 2000 by a drunken driver.  His family has worked tirelessly ever since to honor his memory through the Hero Campaign and reduce drunk driving throughout the country.  The John R. Elliott Hero Campaign is a great addition to Night in Venice!

I’d like to thank the many city team members and volunteers that work hard to make this event possible.

This year’s parade will also honor the late Sue Canale who devoted countless hours of volunteer service to Night in Venice and other city events.  Her family will ride in the parade as well.

I hope you enjoy Night in Venice and the rest of your weekend!

Warm regards,

Jay A. Gillian
Mayor
