Five Things City Council Will Consider at Tonight's Public Meeting

A laser-pointer ban, a move to November elections and appointments are among the items to be considered by City Council on June 23.

City Council meets at 7 p.m. tonight (Thursday, June 23) at City Hall. The meetings invite public comment on any agenda item, and here are five that might interest Ocean City residents and workers:

  1. A ban on selling laser pointers: Council will consider the first reading of an ordinance that would prohibit the sale of certain types of laser pointers in Ocean City. The devices have been the subject of complaints by airplane pilots, residents, drivers and pedestrians.
  2. A public referendum on moving city elections to November: Council will discuss a resolution calling for a public vote on moving municipal elections from May to November. The city currently has school elections in April, municipal elections in May and general elections in November. The move could save money and increase voter turnout.
  3. A contract for legal services from McCrosson and Stanton, P.C.: Council will vote on a resolution that contracts the services of Dorothy McCrosson and Michael Stanton for general legal services at $175 per hour from July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2012.
  4. Appointments to boards and commissions: Council will vote to appoint Eugene Hille as a member of the Utility Advisory Commission and Heather Williams as a member of the Advisory Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
  5. Supporting the repeal of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative: After tabling this resolution at its last meeting, council will revisit a request to show their (ceremonial) support for repealing a national clean-air initiative.
