Council to Discuss Skate Park, Free Beach Access for Vets Thursday Night

Council meets Thursday night, 7 p.m. at the library.

Ocean City Council will consider an ordinance allowing veterans free access to the city’s beaches when it meets Thursday night, 7 p.m. at the library.

The ordinance as it appears in the agenda packet posted on the city’s website reads as follows:

* No fees shall be charged to or collected from persons who have served in any of the Armed Forces of the United States and who were discharged or released therefrom under conditions other than dishonorable and who have either served at least 90 days in active duty or have been discharged or released from active duty by reason of a service-incurred injury or disability.

The ordinance also specifies that the Director of Financial Management will keep a list of all those eligible for the exemption and establish the rules and regulations to comply with the state as to who would receive the extension.

There are also 12 items listed on the Consent Agenda, including an application to Cape May County for an Open Space grant to pay for part of the design and construction of the proposed skateboard park on 5th and Asbury.

The city already set aside $250,000 toward for the proposed $750,000 project, and is now seeking grant money and private donations for the rest of the funding.

Other items include the acquisition of a new asphalt patcher and a used salt spreader, from Sea Isle City.

Steve Wajda is also expected to be appointed to the Shade Tree Committee.
