Residents Help Extinguish Kitchen Fire on Wesley Avenue

The Ocean City Fire Department responds to a call on the 1900 block of Wesley Avenue.

Residents used a home fire extinguisher to help prevent a kitchen fire from spreading and doing further damage to a side-by-side duplex on the 1900 block of Wesley Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

The Ocean City Fire Department responded to a call at 3:01 p.m. and arrived to find a grease fire that had burned window blinds, kitchen cabinets and wicker baskets on top of the cabinets. But the occupants of the home had used a dry chemical fire extinguisher to douse the flames, according to Deputy Chief Bill Bowman.

The fire at 1909 Wesley Avenue was still smoldering, and firefighters were able to quickly control the fire. Nobody was injured, and the duplex suffered only smoke damage beyond the kitchen.

Bowman said the young occupants of the duplex had been making french fries and watching football in their parents' beachfront property when the fire started.

He said the fire could have been much worse if a working fire extinguisher were not on hand.
