Ocean City Firefighters to Participate in 2013 Fight for Air Climb

The climb of 1,088 steps benefits the American Lung Association.

Ocean City firefighters will participate again this year in the Fight for Air Climb for the American Lung Association.

The climb includes 50 flights of stairs, totaling 1,088 steps in the Three Logan Square building in Philadelphia. The event takes place March 23.

Firefighters will race in workout clothes first, and then participate a second time with full gear and air packs.

Capt. Steve Constantino, the event coordinator for the Ocean City Firemen's Mutual Benevolent Association Local 27, is excited for the event as it motivates the team.

"This is a great charity, and raising the level of physical fitness is equally important for us," Constantino said. "It keeps the guys motivated."

Gardens Plaza has offered their building for training, as "nothing is better than practicing in an actual building," Constantino said.

The team currently consists of captain Steve Constantino, firefighters Mike Reganato, Rick Bickmore, Dan Shallawitz and non-firefighters Joel Frankel, Michelle Mairone, Amy Piccinino, Bethanny Higbee and Tobi Care.

Anyone who wants to join the OCFD team may join online and must raise $100 for the event.

The Fight for Air Climb raises awareness of lung diseases and proceeds go directly to the American Lung Association.

Thank you to the OCFD for the use of their facility for the Rabies Clinic the city sponsored. It was dry, warm, and nicely organized to get shots, micro chips, and dog tags for Ocean City.
