Ocean City Police Warn About Copper Theft, Unauthorized Recycling Collection

Police have seen a rise in the number of unauthorized people collecting recyclable materials.

Second homeowners returning to Ocean City for the summer season should check for possible copper thefts as they return to their homes.

The Ocean City Police Department has been taking reports of copper thefts from homes throughout the city during the offseason, primarily from vacation homes where the outside showers and plumbing are removed from the property.

These thefts usually go unnoticed for several months until the owners return to prepare their homes for the summer season, police said Monday morning.

The police department urges any homeowner who has been a victim to contact the Ocean City Police Department and report the theft.

Police are also seeing an increase in the number of unauthorized people who are collecting recycled waste materials, specifically pipes and appliances.

Only companies authorized by the city to collect any type of waste or recycling may make collections by city ordinance.

Police are requesting residents to contact the police department if they see any suspicious people or vehicles in the neighborhood.

Most commonly, these vehicles will be loaded with what appears to be items placed out for trash collection.
