Ocean City Police Charge Gas Station Employee With Fraud

An employee of the Shell station at Ninth Street and West Avenue is accused of using other people's credit-card information.

Ocean City police arrested an employee of the Shell gas station at Ninth Street and West Avenue and charged him using the credit cards of people with in-house accounts at the station to make more than $40,000 in purchases.

Gary Simmons, 59, of Ocean City, is in Cape May County Jail as the investigation continues.

A local landscaper noticed an "unusual charge" on a credit-card account, and that led to an Ocean City Police Department investigation that so far has uncovered more than $40,000 in alleged charges to other people's credit cards, according to Capt. Steve Ang.

The charges date back to May. The people with in-house account at the station include both businesses and private citizens, Ang said.

Simmons was an employee of Grace Energy, which owns the station and operates the fuel business. He is not associated with Wiesenthal's Auto Repair, which leases space at the location to run its repair shop.

Anybody who suspects they may be a victim of the alleged fraud is asked to call the Ocean City Police Detective Bureau at 609-399-9111.
