Loaded Gun, Drugs and a Broken Down Vehicle Lead to Arrest

Ocean City police charge a 64-year-old Blackwood man after a tense moment Sunday evening near Corson's Inlet State Park.

Ocean City police received a call Sunday evening from a tow truck company assisting a driver who had a handgun and "was acting in a suspicious manner."

When the suspect began to reach for something on the passenger seat of the disabled vehicle as officers approached, the officers had to pull their weapons and order the suspect away from the vehicle, according to Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang.

Alfred E. Schubert, 64, of Blackwood, NJ, was taken into custody without incident.

The arrest happened at 8:02 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, on the beach near 59th Street, where a tow truck driver was assisting with the disabled vehicle.

Police found a Smith & Wesson .357 caliber revolver fully loaded and sitting on the front seat of the vehicle, Ang said. Police also found suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia, he said.

Schubert was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Schubert is being held on $5,000 bail or 10 percent. Investigating officers were Lt. Gene Sharpe, Sgt. Jon Campo, Ptl. Anthony Fearnhead and Ptl. Doug Varnold.
