A 21-year-old Philadelphia man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after his Honda Civic crashed through a Boardwalk railing and onto the beach at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.
The driver and a female passenger were not injured but were transported to Shore Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure after the crash, according to Deputy Fire Chief Charles Bowman.
The vehicle's two occupants had been walking on the beach earlier Tuesday evening when they lost a cell phone, according to a preliminary police investigation. The suspects then drove the car onto the boardwalk in an attempt to use the headlights to help search for the phone, Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang said in a statement.
When the suspect attempted to drive the vehicle off the Boardwalk at 22nd Street, he lost control and crashed onto the beach, taking out about 25 feet of railing in the process, Ang said. The car landed on its side. Some Boardwalk decking was also damaged in the crash.
Christian M. Winzcuk, 21, of Philadelphia, is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, motor vehicle on boardwalk, open container of alcohol in vehicle, hindering apprehension and falsely incriminating another, according to Ang.
Hyeyeon Ju, 46, of Jenkintown, Pa., is charged with allowing an intoxicated person to drive, hindering apprehension and open container of alcohol in a vehicle.
Police and firefighters were still at the scene at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The car was a four-door Honda Civic with Pennsylvania license plates. By 10:30 p.m., a tow truck had managed to pull the car back onto the Boardwalk and haul it away.
Access to the Boardwalk near the crash scene is temporarily blocked, and it's unclear when barricades will be removed.
