Driver Arrested on DWI Charge in Crash Off Boardwalk

Driver and a passenger did not suffer serious injury.

A 21-year-old Philadelphia man was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated after his Honda Civic crashed through a Boardwalk railing and onto the beach at 8:53 p.m. Tuesday, April 24.

The driver and a female passenger were not injured but were transported to Shore Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure after the crash, according to Deputy Fire Chief Charles Bowman.

The vehicle's two occupants had been walking on the beach earlier Tuesday evening when they lost a cell phone, according to a preliminary police investigation. The suspects then drove the car onto the boardwalk in an attempt to use the headlights to help search for the phone, Ocean City Police Capt. Steven Ang said in a statement.

When the suspect attempted to drive the vehicle off the Boardwalk at 22nd Street, he lost control and crashed onto the beach, taking out about 25 feet of railing in the process, Ang said. The car landed on its side. Some Boardwalk decking was also damaged in the crash.

Christian M. Winzcuk, 21, of Philadelphia, is charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, motor vehicle on boardwalk, open container of alcohol in vehicle, hindering apprehension and falsely incriminating another, according to Ang.

Hyeyeon Ju, 46, of Jenkintown, Pa., is charged with allowing an intoxicated person to drive, hindering apprehension and open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

Police and firefighters were still at the scene at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The car was a four-door Honda Civic with Pennsylvania license plates. By 10:30 p.m., a tow truck had managed to pull the car back onto the Boardwalk and haul it away.

Access to the Boardwalk near the crash scene is temporarily blocked, and it's unclear when barricades will be removed.

mommies4sweeties April 25, 2012 at 02:46 AM
I can't understand how this could be funny... Not only could someone have gotten really hurt, there was also costly damage done to the boardwalk. I hope they are made to pay for the damages and get their license suspended !
Linda April 25, 2012 at 02:52 AM
Oh I don't think you have to hope, I'm sure they will have to pay and I agree with a license suspension.

Where did it drive ON to the Boardwalk? Didn't this happen a while back, someone took out the 23rd street railing because they were driving drunk on the boards?
BET April 25, 2012 at 11:28 AM
you knew someone would make a BYOB posting............. if another whale was to was up there would be a BYOB posting.......... come on May 8th
Eric Sauder April 25, 2012 at 12:38 PM
Hey I wasn't going to touch it but now that someone has it couldn't have been alcohol related because we don't have BYOB. I heard the whale was drunk too.
Eric Sauder April 25, 2012 at 12:40 PM
(On anticipation).

If there was alcohol involved, and since we don't have BYOB, that could mean the drinking took place at home. It's time OCNJ wake up and ban drinking at home for the protection of all....(yes, I am being sarcastic...)
Gary Trucano April 25, 2012 at 01:20 PM
Pennsylvania license plates, enough said.

Cougars and Foxes and BYOB.. OH MY!
Kirk April 25, 2012 at 04:53 PM
hahaha. But you have to know we are talking about a moron here Joe. Here is how I envision the thought process: "Hmmmm, I lost my phone in the dark; what should I do to find my phone? A) Go to Wawa and buy a $10 flashlight and look for it. B) Say the heck with it and call the carrier, report the phone as lost and get a new one in the morning for a couple hundred dollars C) Illegally drive a car (after drinking etOH) on the boardwalk to use the lights to search then crash the car, leading to thousands of dollars in legal fees, fines, car repair, insurance increases. Well, Option C is clearly the path I should take!"
Rich April 25, 2012 at 07:05 PM
But, did they find the cell phone?
Kirk April 25, 2012 at 07:26 PM
"LIKE"
jim April 25, 2012 at 09:48 PM
be a shame if all those people with Pa. plates stopped coming..... we wouldn't need a boardwalk to entertain the seagulls.
Coral April 25, 2012 at 10:35 PM
we see your name ends with O.. enough said.

Not to worry about the damage to the boardwalk, The city ownes plenty of IPE which has been sitting in storage for years down at the town dump. It's all been paid for with our tax money, but the tree huggers wont let us use what has already been cut down. I would like to see more damage to the boardwalk so we can use up the IPE before we sell it at auction for 10 cents on our tax dollar.
Amanda Thomas April 26, 2012 at 01:48 PM
We aren't sure where he drove onto the boards. And yes this happened a whole ago when a man was fleeing the cops and decided toake his getaway on the boardwalk and then failed by going off the boardwalk on 23rd
Denise Fisk-Baj April 26, 2012 at 03:49 PM
How about selling the IPE and use the funds to put our skatepark back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gary Trucano April 26, 2012 at 06:45 PM
Coral, if you are going to make bigotted slurs against Italian Americans, at least have the decency to use your first and last name, instead of hiding behind a screen name.
Denise Fisk-Baj April 26, 2012 at 08:25 PM
Is anybody going to the Council Meeting tonight?????
Ellen April 27, 2012 at 04:11 AM
What an angry, negative, insecure little man you are. I can only surmise those qualities about you from all of your posts over the past year.
Sherry Thompson April 27, 2012 at 04:25 AM
Has anyone else written this? Since most everyone has a cell, why didn't the other person call his friend's number, so they could follow the sound of ringing?I know--too logical for a couple of drunks.
