Dead Crabs on Beach: Have You Seen Them?

A reader says:

"Is it usual for this time of year to find  dead crabs lying on the shoreline in the north end of the island. While walking my dogs, I have noticed literally hundreds of small crabs on the beach."

Have you seen them? Let us know in the comments.

Oh yes I do see the cooler now. Yum what a catch! Hope someone finds out what kind of crabs they were and how they got there.

You are right, that was somebody's photo, the crabs on the beach are regular orange-yellow crabs, sometimes they are in-tact other times in pieces..mostly legs now that I think of it…they are not as plentiful now as they were last week...

ok guys got a chance to walk the north end beach today with chester my chesapeake bay retriever, whats left of the crabs I think you're referring to are small jonah crabs which are unable to swim, only able to walk but not against a strong tide surge which deposited them there. The larger crabs can withstand that surge but not the smaller ones as they're not strong or heavy enough.By the way there's very few left as I suspect the Herring gulls have had their day.

So it's hakuna matata. No need to call in the NJ Dept of Environmental Resources, or whatever they're called. I think the photo in original posting (showing the wrong species of crabs, heaped in a dense pile, and not even of the actual scene being reported) got many of us needlessly concerned. Circle of life, not beach replenishment.
