OPINION: Citywide Yardsale anyone?

Last year Ocean City did not hold the City Wide Yard Sale at the Tabernacle neither in the spring or the fall.  The reasoning was that tainted merchandise might be sold at these events.

Other shore towns continued holding their sales with no problem.  Ocean City has no plans to hold this event this year as well.  When you think of all the activities that bring people into town to shop and eat, this was certainly one of them.  It was always held the Saturday before the block party which was a great way to start the season.

So what's up Ocean City?
Frank February 19, 2014 at 08:51 PM
I care because I am tired of everyone in OC bitching about EVERYTHING - its annoying.
Frank February 19, 2014 at 08:53 PM
Barbara - curious if you like it so much why don't you organize the event?
Frank February 19, 2014 at 08:53 PM
Patch should be renamed BITCHFEST
JCP February 19, 2014 at 09:07 PM
Frank, it seems after reading all these posts, that any stirring of the pot as you say, only happened after you started commenting. You are really the only one who doesn't care about it, so why don't you just take yourself out of the comment thread, and let the rest of us who are interested in having the yard sale with the Tabernacle get on with it. Then, I believe we will all be happy. Again, when I reread these comments, the only one bitching is you.
JCP February 19, 2014 at 10:03 PM
if it does happen, it does. Everyone wins. And if it doesn't, then no one is worse for the wear. Not sure why anyone would sabotage something that is good for all, that's all I'm saying.
Frank February 19, 2014 at 10:20 PM
JCP - I am not the only one who doesn't care about. I suggest you re read the comments.
Frank February 19, 2014 at 10:25 PM
JCP - Sabotage? Really? Now we are reduced to suggesting conspiracy theories for yard sales. Perhaps you, Barbara, and others who are interested could collaborate on your own.
JCP February 19, 2014 at 10:44 PM
That is what we WERE doing until you and I believe only ONE other started nay saying. I'm still not sure why you are still on the comment thread if you are not interested in the yard sale at all? Why? Why are you still commenting if you think "it's all a bitchfest"?? And I might have to agree with Barbara and again ask your age as my definition of sabotage does not say anything about conspiracy. By sabotage, I meant an undermining of a cause. See you at the yard sale, I'll sell you a dictionary....

Ok people. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. It adds variety to life. Since my Post-Sandy Heart attack I sit back and think that "it is all good". The reason that we need the Chambers OK is because we need to be on their calendar so people everywhere can see that this is a good weekend to book a room or condo, save up money to spend on food, an OC Sweatshirt and a trinket or two. The retail stores do get more customers on the Sunday after (at least we do). So I have a couple calls in about the Calendar and let's do it. I'll post if I hit any problems.
Lisa Anderson Yoskin February 20, 2014 at 10:15 AM
Thank you Asbury Attic for explaining about the calender, is there another way to have the event placed on the calender, I assume it's the event calender on the web? If you have any contact info maybe we can call. I don't see the harm of leaving the tabernacle out, having the yard sale in the neighborhoods and add it to the calender. As far as maps go how bout if the one everyone who is doing it agrees to put 1 yellow balloon on the corner of the street, now it's like a treasure hunt follow the yellow brick balloons to find your treasure. Just a thought. Hope Frank doesn't get mad. LOL
JoAnn February 20, 2014 at 10:53 AM
Lisa, Great Idea! How would we get out the message once we get on the calendar? Anyone know? Most of the responses are pro! I will be down to Asbury Attic to sing a petition this weekend. Who is with me?
JoAnn February 20, 2014 at 10:53 AM
Oops sign a petition. We could sing but singing is more effective. LOL!
JoAnn February 20, 2014 at 10:57 AM
Another benefit gives new home investors opportunities to purchase used goods, including furniture, to fill houses or change out furniture they inherited with their sale that has to be replaced. Who are the retailers who are on the board? We need to know who to approach.
Lisa Anderson Yoskin February 20, 2014 at 12:13 PM
Humm not sure how to get the message out, how do they normally do it? I know I get the emails that say What is happening in OC, is that part of what the merchant association does those sending those emails? Or is that sent from the event planning committee (if there is such a thing) How are events advertised?
oclocal1 February 20, 2014 at 12:33 PM
Lets put A yellow balloon on franks street! And shjon stay in pa! Until you are A full time resident shut up and stay out of our business!!! Born and raised in good old Ocean City 47 years and counting!!
Marlene McCoy DeSimone February 20, 2014 at 01:32 PM
My name is now on the Petition, I really miss the sale
JCP February 20, 2014 at 02:12 PM
How can we sign the petition if we are not physically there right now? Thanks everyone....can't wait....
Lisa Anderson Yoskin February 20, 2014 at 02:16 PM
@oclocal: that's not nice. Be flattered that people take an interest in what's going on. Full or part time shouldn't really matter, as a matter of fact what you paid for your house 47 years ago is pennies compared to what people have paid for homes in the last 10 years! I'm not trying to be insulting, but I think even if someone wasn't raised there or is a second home owner it is a wonderful thing that they want to be involved with the community. If no new blood ever moves in, or invests in the area the town will dry up and die.
Frank February 20, 2014 at 02:36 PM
I realize society today has an issue being told "no" and its not a politically correct word. Its also a word we need to start using with our children (thats a different topic). The answer is simply "no". If the City, Chamber, and Downtown Merchants Association do not want to support this event it is their choice. Of course that does not mean that those who would like the event cant organize and find a location on your own.
Shjon Podein February 20, 2014 at 04:03 PM
Thank you Lisa OClocal1, you are a sad, sad person. It is a shame you have never left the island or experienced reality. Frank, once again you are dead on with your comment.
JCP February 20, 2014 at 04:26 PM
Isn't it a person's prerogative to change their mind? Is it written somewhere in the O.C. by laws that if some function is halted or stopped, it may never again be resurrected? After all, we can buy more than toothpaste on Sundays now, can't we....?? Has anyone contacted the Tabernacle, City, Chamber, and Downtown Merchants Assc. yet to see if they would like to participate? Then we can lay this to rest and get on with having a yard sale, either with or without them.
oclocal1 February 20, 2014 at 05:45 PM

The Asbury Attic - Children's Consignment February 20, 2014 at 06:54 PM
Hello.........Yard Sale.........wasn't that the issue? I spoke to the Merchants Association. They are not going to hold the Yard Sale. However we have their blessing to hold a City Wide Community Yard Sale. So The Asbury Attic can be the home base/office for the event. Stop in for a information sheet to sign up and be on the map or send me an email and I will send you the form. Thank you to all the people that signed the petition. We hear you. 825 Asbury Ave TheAsburyAttic@aol.com
Lisa Anderson Yoskin February 20, 2014 at 07:13 PM
I hope the Patch puts something out that The Asbury Attic is the place to sign up....HINT....HINT Patch. That's awesome! Any idea the date?
Barbara Colombo February 21, 2014 at 06:58 AM
If everyone would contact the Chamber...they would be the ones in charge just as they are for the Block Party. They were the ones that organized the Tabernacle yard sale for all those years that Marcia ran it. If enough people showed interest I think they would respond.
The Asbury Attic - Children's Consignment February 21, 2014 at 09:23 AM
Good morning everyone. We are going to run with this ball as a community. The Chamber have bigger fish to fry at this point. So that is fine. So let's move forward. April 26th (Saturday) What time? We will have a map, signs and the yellow balloon idea. What is the cost? Can everyone help out with the advertising: Facebook, directional signs, word of mouth etc. I will contact the papers. Still sign up at "The Asbury Attic" 825 Asbury or email TheAsburyAttic@aol.com and I will send you a form to fill out.
Lisa Anderson Yoskin February 21, 2014 at 02:01 PM
@Asbury Attic, I have hit "like" on your facebook page so if you put something on facebook anyone who has "Like" on your page can share it on thier own page.
CJ March 05, 2014 at 08:57 AM
They cancelled this event last year and said that it was to return this year and we are very sad if it isn't. We (myself and 5 other friends) always came down from Pennsylvania and stayed in OC from before the yard sale until after the block party. We ate every meal in OC, shopped until we dropped every day. We did this twice a year at the beginning of the season and the end for years! I know of other people who have also come down for the Citywide Yard Sale. I do not understand why they would not want to continue to have such a great event. I guess Ocean City does not want our money anymore. I know of other beach towns that have city and town wide sales. I guess we will go there. Sorry
The Asbury Attic - Children's Consignment March 05, 2014 at 04:16 PM
Thank you CJ. Make your plans because the Yard Sale is on.
JoAnn March 05, 2014 at 11:44 PM
Good. Glad it is ON! Be down to Asbury Attic to sign up. JoAnn
