Obituary: Ocean City Library Director Chris Maloney

Visitation and Memorial Mass are set for Monday evening and Tuesday morning.

Christopher John Maloney, 45, of Somers Point, NJ, formerly of Haddonfield, NJ, passed away on December 30, 2013 in Somers Point.

Chris was born in Lewiston, NY on August 19, 1968 to Barbara and Jim Maloney, a longtime assistant to Coach John Chaney with the men's basketball team at Temple University. Chris is predeceased by his father Jim, and is survived by his mother Barbara of Buffalo, NY, his brother Peter of Burlingame, CA, his brother Paul of San Mateo, CA, his sister Sarah of Arlington, VA, and his brother Matt of Houston, TX.

Chris attended junior high school at Christ the King and high school at Paul VI in Haddonfield, NJ, graduating in 1986. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in 
History from Holy Family University in 1991, followed by a Master’s Degree in Library Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1994.

He dedicated more than 17 years to the community of Ocean City, NJ. He excelled in several professional capacities during his career with the Ocean City Free Public Library (OCFPL), including his most recent role as Library Director, in which he 
served since 2003. His vision and leadership drove the development and implementation of advanced technology, and numerous innovative services, classes, clubs, and family programs for the Cape May County community. In 2010, he led the transformation of OCFPL, rebuilding it into an award-winning knowledge center earning recognition as one of America’s Star Libraries by “LJIndex of Public Library 
Service” in 2013. Chris also led the launch of OneClickdigital, an online service that allows library patrons to download a wide range of audiobooks, including best-sellers. His extensive knowledge of library operations was frequently quoted, and he appeared in the Ocean City Sentinel.

Chris began his career at Pennsauken Public Library. He was an avid reader, a cross country runner in high school and carried his love for distance running throughout his life. Chris was a passionate fan of Temple University and University of Pennsylvania basketball, as well as USC and Stanford football.

Relatives and friends may visit the Godfrey Funeral Home, 809 Central Ave., Ocean City, NJ on Monday evening from 6-9 pm, with a Memorial Mass being offered Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock at St. Augustine’s Church of St. Damien Parish, 13th and Wesley Ave., Ocean City, NJ with visitation from nine until the time of mass. In
