Plane rescue

Forty years ago, Saturday, August 18, 1973, the most spectacular rescue of the summer occurred off the busy 8th Street beach. “Tow plane belly flops into surf” was the front page headline in the August 21 Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger. The article reported fast action by lifeguards Joe Grimes, left, and Fred Miller saved the life of a pilot whose banner-towing plane crashed into the ocean less than 100 yards from the beach.
