Michael was born on June 16, 2011. Prior to his birth, his family learned that he had Trisomy 21 (also know as Down Syndrome) and a heart defect that would require open heart surgery. In addition to cognitive impairments, he also has something called Hirschsprung's Disease. HD affects the digestive system, requires surgery and lifelong interventions to manage it. Through extensive research, the Colorectal Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital was found. They specialize in the treatment of HD. The Polcini family plans to travel there to have surgery to reverse his colostomy.
